Good lord! That is a monster. What a gut!
Bob
San Vicente lake , in San Diego.
very little interest in these fish, I get to the lake in the morning in spring maybe 10 trailers in the parking lot, most chasing Bass.
i think to myself 4 million people in the county, and less then 50 people fishing.
Picture sure looks photo shopped to me? Scott
Maybe not as an article pulled up on google but picture still doesn't look right to me. Says it was caught on Mother's day by a kayaker. Scott
:yikes, congratulations sir!
That thing is a pig!!
That’s a sweet place, and by the size doesn’t look to be pressured for pans. Nice!
Bob
That’s a giant and a good fishery.

That's a pole breaker right there.
That's what California reservoirs look like, there clear canyon lakes, up to 300 ft deep.
This lake reopened 2016 after raising the dam 117 ft.
The original dam was built in 1943.
There is video of the release, park rangers weight and verified on calibrated scale.
Theres0[ no need to lie or cheat , panfishing is a hobby .
Not a career.
sure enough a beast of a red ear , wonder what makes them get so super size in them western lakes ?
some of them western spots produce red ear that look just totally unreal ....
got lots of freshwater shellfish or crawdads or something else they feed up on ?
for sure KABOOM is the word ....
and btw the image looks real to me , just saying
there is a kayak in the image as stated and nothing seems terribly disproportionate in the image to me ?
Ketchn,
We are on the Colorado river water system, I believe it is the mussels.
Our Lakes are growing with hybrid stains as well, the guy that caught the record fish is a kayak fisherman. He fishes both saltwater and fresh.
I remember Sonny’s reports from LP in Cali. He was always catching monsters. Hope he is doing well…
Bob
Last thing I heard was from one of his fishin' partners when I was inquiring about that panfish bug lure him and his daughter came up with. LP had closed the marina to build a new one. Sonny's Pontoon was kept theier. when it closed Sonny sold the pontoon as he lived somewhere near Riverside, Ca. and couldn't see the expense of haulin' it back and forth. That was a couple years aga before the pandemic China caused. I haven't seen or heard nothing from or about him since, though I think of him often. Sure hope he's doin' alright and the Lord is looking after him.
Just googled the lake up. It's 25 N.E. of San Diego and when full its 306 feet deep. WOW!!!! Bet there's more like him in their....
Our state record Shellcracker was a 4#2oz caught back in 1995 out of a South Georgia pond .
I’m betting there’s a few nice ones in West Point Reservoir I fish on a regular basis.
The banks are loaded with mussel shells .
We’ve caught some nice ones , but nothing that size .
Those mussels must be like a steak and a baked potato to those fish. They’re beasts out there. The Great Lakes have been cleaned up by the zebra and quagga mussels, you have to wonder if they’re big up there too. The goby’s up there have made the smallmouth fishery superb, 5# fish are common I’m told. I want one of those on 4# line! I might want to bring a sammich.
WOW- I always wondered what an 18 lb California largemouth ate! Beast of a fish for sure!
Attachment 461338 While fishing Lake Havasu when we pulled the anchor we brought up a rock with some quagga mussels on it, these are what the giant redear eat to get so big.
