We went to a new body of water today. Found multiple schools of fish that look like this. Caught one 12" crappie but I'm unsure if it was a fluke fish feeding on these or if this is an inactive school of crappie. Thoughts?Attachment 458501

Looks like crappie to me.
Sure looks like crappie. I went to a little forest service lake and thought I was seeing individual crappie. But, all they would do was circle my bait real fast and look at it again. Never caught one, don't know what they were.
It looks like small crappie to me maybe 6 inchers.

possibly crappie , not sure as to how you can tell they be little ones though ?

no clue , if you dropped a jig and ketched a crappie , it is more than likely they was crappie is my take ...
I found some schools like that back in a cove once, couldn't get them to bite a jig, but they were bunched in so tight I could feel them ticking the line. So I dropped a jigging rap in there and snagged a couple, turns out they were big, crappie sized shad and carp.
Since then if they won't react at all to a jig I just move on. If nothing else a crappie will swim up and check out a jig even if they don't bite.
I find schools of 6-10in Goo on Ross Barnett that look just like that. I would catch one Crappie and spend a hour catching Goo waiting on another Crappie. You're well North of us so I don't know if you even have Goo. I have learned to not spend too much time on schools looking like that.

thin filets , but tasty , go by lots of names , better than a sand bass aka white bass by about 2.5 miles in the baked goods dept. ....
If they're crappie, they're small, and IMO not worth the effort even if they were biting.
a 12 inch fish will fill that block (or close ) especially at 15 ft .Quote:

I can't compare fish to block size on my Active Target. Sometimes my jig looks almost as big as a decent crappie.
I found some fish in about 25 to 30 fow and there was just too many to ignore, but closer to the bottom. After an hour and catching ten to twelve inch catfish, I figured I had my answer and there was no crappie to be found. I moved on too. Looked a lot like that on my screen.
