PB Bass on ultalight
I have been craving some fish tacos and gills are my favorite for tacos so grabbed a couple of ultralights and out the door I went. Fishing a small lake with limited access and a very steep hill that doesn't get hardly any pressure. Started catching 7.5-9" gills until I had 10 nice gills on the stringer, perfect for 2 meals. Only 9:30 so kept fishing. I was using my 7' Shimano Soare BB with a Stella 2000 CS reel and 2# Maxima with a 1/48 duck jig tied on a tiny #12 sickle hook and while reeling in another fat gill this monster bass crashes the party and engulfs my 8" gill. Gave her a little time to swallow the gill set the hook and it was on. Several long runs and in five minutes had her in my hand. She weighed 10.23 lbs., 24.5" long with a huge 21" girth. Took a bunch of pics and put her back in the water and watched her swim off. Still pumped up over this.

Very nice beast! She got a meal and you got a memory. Thanks for sharing with us

I released her after weight, measurements and photo session. Probably had her out of the water for two minutes and she splashed me before bolting away. She looked ready to pop and wanted her to make more babies. Considering that I was using such light line and had probably caught over 100 gills and crackers on that jig over several trips without retying before the bass ate my gill made it even more incredible.

WOW doesn’t come close!! Very nice fish that any of us would love a chance at. Shows off your skills too, quite a feather in your cap. Somewhere around 5 1/2lbs is mine and it took me a long time to calm down afterwards. I’m sure you’ll carry this high for a while, rightly so. Good Job Mister!!

Attachment 458221I was using the jigs on the top side of the picture. The 7' Shimano Soare BB is a fantastic rod, my first JDM rod I purchased five years ago for $120 and my favorite rod. Only rod that goes on every fishing trip even if I'm fishing for bass or hybrids, stash it under the trucks back seat just in case.

Heck yeah! Now that looks fun and some nice ties as well.

Ketchn, it's my first one that I actually landed. Probably wouldn't have landed her if I hadn't given her time to swallow it. Looked down her throat and only saw the tail of the gill. Had one about 6# grab a gill yesterday but pulled it out of her mouth because there was so many trees and debris in the water I knew I wouldn't land her on 2# test. Going to put some 3# on the reel today and give it another shot tomorrow. Gills are bedding now in a couple spots, got several 9" yesterday and one hit 9.5 ", getting closer to my goal of 10" gill this year. Still haven't found any redear yet but this lake has some nice ones.

Congrats on your new PB. I have come close to the ten pound mark but never been able to break it. Well done !

What are those feathers called if I want to order some? The jigs look good.

Looks like mallard flank to me but might not be. I’ve tied some with duck just have a tough time getting I to cut clean up by the head.

It's either Gadwall or Pintail. I use mallard and gadwall most in these ties but also use wood duck and pintail. Slight variations in them all but all work very well. I tie these mostly with either black or red thread using 8/0 UNI thread. Red thread is actually Fl. Orange and only comes in 8/0 for some reason but thread glows under uv light and fish see it better, my favorite thread to use.
