Anyone hear they got these out now??? (Really wanted to be first poster.)
I got mine. This thing is sweet!!! I caught 900 crappie my first trip out. :D Just kidding. Its hard to get any fishing done because I want to keep trolling and watching the screen. I'm still learning about the unit and my friends are all jealous.

I've had a 797 for a few months and it is amazing what they can do. I have a couple of shots of a submerged bridge and an old submerged dam and power plant that are like photographs. I've tried to post them in the Ga state site but haven't been able to get the photos up.
Finding new places and underwater structure is almost more fun than catching fish. It takes me a long time to get to my fishing spots because I want to run 5 mph to see what I can find. I'm sure the 997 is even better because of the bigger screen, but at half the price the 797 is great.
The 997 is a fantastic unit. It's like watching a big screen tv out on the lake. I have posted several pic's that I took with this unit on the other board, but will try to get some new ones and post them here. I know where a sunken boat is and will get pic's of that on here soon. Thanks for the new board Ed!
I have the H'bird 797 c2 SI and I to spend to much time looking at the screen instead of fishing. It is amazing what you see down there.
My home lake is far from being a 'clear lake' so finding a lot of surprises as cruise around.

A sonar-ignorant question here:
Do the side scan units require clear water to operate?
Tommy
No, they do not require clear water.Quote:

In about 10 years I might be able to afford a worn out one. By then they will have units that let you just look down and see the fish and emit sounds that make them bite. I'll be stuck with an old 997.
I have had my 797 since Feb, best money I have ever spent on fishing.
Can anone tell me what is different about these two. Other that the size of the screen. I have been looking at the trying to make up my mine which to buy. A $1000.00 ver. $2000.00 must look real hard that a lot of money.

I have a 997 on the console and a 797 on the front of my boat. If I had to keep just one of them, it would be the 997. It is a lot bigger and so much more easier to see. Plus it has more power than the 797.
Looks like a 997 is going to find its way to my door. Had been saveing change for years found about $450 to justify the 997 over the 797. Is that the way to do that?
Sam
How good are these units for scanning under docks, I would like to use one for running along docks and finding brush and ofcourse crappie.
Anyone know of a good spot to fish in Tulsa ok?
I've also been very interested in them . The one question I have is do any of you that use these ever own a high end Lowrance? The side imaging looks great but how does the sonar compare. With the lowrance I can tell a striper from a spotted bass in 25' of water. Herring from thread fin shad. Will I have that kind of capability with ether one of these units? I've been having issues with lowrance over warrantee problems so I'm thinking about changing. But what I've seen with the sonar on the 997 does not impress me . Sure would like some good imput.
I'll put it this way, I would rather fish out of a 50 dollar boat than give up my 997si.
Sounds like some of you are asking all the same questions that I have in my head this summer...I'm leaning really hard towards a side imaging humminbird but can't make up my mind about the extra $1000 for the big screen of the 997...in talking to folks at the boat stores the sonar of the humminbird is not in the class of the Lowrance however so that's not real comforting either when you get ready to spend that kind of money...
Your right, I’ll have to crack a few piggy banks to get either one of them. That’s why I’m trying to do my home work. One thing that’s holding me up is that the 797 has the new screen and the 997 doesn’t. You can see the new screen a lot better in the sun. Also I’ve heard from a prostaff that hummingbird might be come out with a cheaper side image unit next year. I wish I could run my lowrance sonar and mapping at the same time while run the side imaging. That would be the best of all worlds. Make me happy anyway
A couple of the guys that I know that have the side imager have left their "normal" graph on the trolling motor and mounted the humminbird transducer on the back and look at both of them while they are sitting up front...one of my problems with Lowrance is the zoom feature on the GPS. I'm not sure without using one that .05 miles is small enough to be able to really pinpoint brushpiles and what not with waypoints.
hey crip47,I was like everbody else I did not know if Iwanted to spend 2 grand on a sonnar unit ethier. So I did some serious reserch & found out they will do evrery thing it says that it will do.I have had mine for about 6 months. You will not beleive the detail the si shows,it does not matter if the water is muddy or clear. On the diffrence between the 797si & the 997si is the screen size you can see the screen on both units very well in bright sun light, the older 987 are the ones you can not see very well in bright sun light.Go to yahoo.com click on yahoo groups & then type in side imaging.there is a ton of info & pics. just on side imaging.
Here’s what I’m talking about. In the picture is from a recording I made at slabfest in February. I was in 30ft. of water and you can see plenty of fish. You can also see my 1/6oz. jig go down to the bottom and back up. Also I had three jigs in the rod holders at 15 ft. witch you can see. If I had my unit set from 25 to 30 I’d be about to tell if they were male or female….Just kidding…What I’d like to know is can I get about the same definition from a hummingbird? I use my sonar to the max. If I’m in 15ft. or deeper I don’t put lines out until I see fish.
I’ve been on yahoo for about six months and have a bps ten mins. from the house. I play will the 997 display all time. I’ve also talked to hummingbird three times.
One good thing I found out is that hummingbird has software to convert you waypoints to their unit. That’s a good thing. I have over 1800 waypoints cauterized to the lake they are in. That will make for an easy transfer to a new unit.
My lcx-20 has been acting up since May and has been sent back three times. The first two times they had a 10 day turnaround. Witch they did nothing. This time I got hold of someone that says it will be taken care of even if they have to send me a new unit. Their service has not been the same since Lawrence sold out about a year ago. I fish three days a week so it is really used and nine months is fishing deep.
All I hear is how great the side imaging is and I believe it. But, no one ever mentions the sonar. I have an aqua-view that I like to look under docks with. I can spend all day looking and get home and my wife will ask wares the fish. OOPS. I’m not looking for another toy but a tool.
Hay, thanks for your comments. Sonar is a question that does not seem to get addressed. I know there is going to be a new leaning curve.
crap47 On the down part of sonar unit (shooting stright down)I think the definition is alot better on the humminbird,It seems to me it is alot cleaner. On mine there is hardly any surface culter & I can see the bottom better on my 997si than I could on my hi dollar lowrance. With side imaging you can look under the docks to.If you have ? about side imaging unit just email@ [email protected] i'll you my phone.I can explain it better person to person.
