I am a MORON hence my name on this forum LOL. I just realized that shallow spool reels are a thing. I change line about once a month and use 4 pound mono almost exclusively for everything (even LMB). I am looking for suggestion for something under $100.

Ok…..you can get a Shimano Nasci or Sahara out of Japan for under 100 bucks delivered. Just because they are sold in Japan does not mean it is made in Japan. Both these reels are the same as US models but with shallow spool. Except….these models are not sold in the US. The Nasci and Sahara in the C2000S. The C stands for compact and S for shallow spool. They take a 1000 size reel body and put a 2000 series size shallow spool on them. The Sahara is 70 bucks delivered….the Nasci is 88 bucks delivered. Here are links. Yes they do. I have seen some….also out of Japan…that are made for 1000…2000 series and so on. Unfortunately I did not bookmark them so can’t readily find them now. Shimano and Daiwa do not sell shallow spool reels here as very few anglers here use the small diameter lines. A typical 1000 series shallow spool reel will hold 100 meters of line that is 0.128mm. That same reel sold in the sates with deep spool would hold over around 300 meters of that same size line. Shallow spool reels are readily available all over the world…but not here. UL angling here is nowhere near as big as everywhere else.Quote:

Many times my stuff is at my door 36 hours after I get a shipping confirmation. Of course sometimes delays arise but I’ve never had anything take over a week to get here from Digitaka. They do not work on weekends…so just be aware of that.Quote:

I looked on Digitaki website and did not see the Daiwa Regal. That’s a great reel for the money but one that really needs a shallow spool. :twocents
I found a regal from Japan with a shallow spool. The price went from under $70 to over $200. Kinda soured my interest. And I love my regals. I’d like to find a spool arbor for the regal 1000.

I'm guessing just backing it with cheap line is out the question. I have a Diawa Revros that has such a shallow face it's almost irritating. That reel may cost less than your willing to pay for one.

When using lines with a small of a diameter as I do that theory don't fly. Many times I am using lines as small as 0.074mm. Put backing on there and the line digs in and under the backing. The largest diameter line I use is a 0.128mm. Deep spools don't work for me at all.Quote:

Use electrical tape to build up the spool keep it tight and stretched when putting it on the spool cures the problem of digging in.
That don’t fly too well either. Not sure how many folks here have ever spooled up some braided line with a diameter of only 0.074mm. Line that fine can and will work under the tape. Been using shallow spool reels for a long time and if one is a light line angler…meaning using lines of 3# test and under….a shallow spool is the only way to go. And I’m not talking about US market 3 pound test lines that in reality will break at 6 pounds and are thus much larger in diameter. So if one is a light line angler shallow spools are the only way to go. I have about 2 dozen reels….all are shallow spool. I have no need to use 200 yards of heavy line so I have no need for a deep spool reel. But if one uses large diameter lines then they don’t really need a shallow spool reel.Quote:

if you do not use electrical tape or something else braid will just slip on the spool it is what i do for every spinning reel i use braid on..
This is true...but you don't have to put but just a sliver of tape and the braid will grab a hold. I just spooled up a reel last week that and used no backing or tape....tied directly to the spool. The Varivas Double Cross Braid X8...some amazing stuff....very different than regular braid. It is combination of braid and ester line.Quote:

Check out the Bass Pro Shops Carbonlite spinning reels. Same as a Daiwa LT and they have shallow spools compared to the same size Daiwa.

Did you ever find a solution for this? I recently started designing my own spools for the old mitchell 308s for the same reason and put a 2mm line groove on it, it casts pretty well.Quote:

Love em almost as much as my favorites, very good reel for the money. Bought em on eBay and shipping was about two weeks and free. I found a Regal 1000s for about $135 and bought it with no hesitation. It’s a ten bearing model that now is no longer offered and a very smooth reel. The d models I own are also nice but I don’t need all the line capacity for my tiny braid.
