Other than the fact that we pronounce it correctly, and everyone else pronounces it incorrectly, does anyone know of any other reason why we in NC and SC pronounce it as it's spelled, "crappie" and everywhere else they pronounce it "croppie"?

Where I live locals call them..."Speckled perch" or "Specks" But I will say Croppie when talking to fishermen from other states... crappie is how I feel sometimes.

NC & SC are not the only states sayin "Crap-ee". I've heard it pronounced that way in Tenn & Ala, too.
I grew up calling them "croppie", but still use both pronunciations.
According to the dictionary ... either pronunciation is correct.
According to history ... they were called "Krah peh" (the French Canadian pronunciation of Crapet)
There are many local nicknames. I've told the story where my Grandpa mentioned going fishing for "Newlights", and I thought we were going after some new, exotic fish that I'd never heard of in my preteen age. Then we went Crappie fishing, as per usual, and I realized he was using a really old nickname from his early days. :Rofl
As long as I know what they mean I don't care how they say it. Unless they're trying some elitist language on me!

I’m from NC and have always heard it called crappie but I’ve also lived here my whole life…lol. Seems normal to me :biggrin
I'm in Illinois and everyone here calls them Croppie and that's what I've called them my whole life.
My son will hear guys call them crappie while we watch YouTube and say what in the world.

When I lived in NC they called a pecan a pee can. I said a pee can is what you pee in. Here in TN it is pe'can, I think it how it looks. Please correct if need be.
