WWYD ? Rod transport rack or new prop ?

If you had a choice, a rod transport rack (cornfield, millennium, etc) OR a different prop ? What would you do? Why?

Transporting 14’ rods on a 14’ boat is “fun”. Heck, 7’ rods are interesting! I really don’t like walking around things on the boat, gonna break a rod, fall, or both.

With adding wood for a partial front deck ( I removed some of what I added) trolling motor, two batteries (27 series), I’m taxing that little 9.8 Tohatsu. 16MPH is it. I’ve played with mounting heights, trim positions, battery placement. Anything I’ve missed?

What would I gain? 1-3mph? It’s getting on plane, that’s it though. I put a tiny tach on it, read 5800-6000rpm. 5-6000 is what’s in the manual. It didn’t sound like it though. I called tiny tach, they recommended a change, I did that, need to test run again.

As I type this, I think I’m seeing the answer, sometimes it’s good to say things “out loud”!

I think that might be all you will ever get out of that little motor. I don’t think a prop change will give you enough difference to justify changing it. But I could be wrong.

That’s kinda what I was thinking as I wrote. Guess I was looking for verification of that.
I’m researching the millennium r300 vs cornfields vertical rack. Will see what other ones I find.

what little it will change will be virtually unnoticed. as far as the rod racks go, I see cornfield units for sale used on FB marketplace often and they are hard to beat. Ive been running them for 5 years and love em. Good luck

The prop change wont make a noticeable difference at all. 10hp can only give so much. Maybe coating the underside of your boat with some kind of "slick" epoxy to reduce drag may help you squeak out 1 more MPH or help with gas mileage. I'm assuming the motor already sips gas as it is so maybe all the returns you would get from doing that would be all for naught. I would definitely go with the rod racks.

I’m with Jack, good luck with your choice. If you’re staying within suggested rpm at WOT then you’ve gotten what you’ll get. Go up and you may get a little more speed but will also decrease hole shot. Go down and you’ll gain hole shot, possibly over rev and definitely lose some top end. Let us know which rod holders you decide on.

I decided to build some rod holders. Won’t be pretty, definitely won’t be pretty! Save a little money, keep me busy. Weathers not the best here, 40 and raining, rain is supposed to stop, then a north wind increases. I know, I know, excuses!
Have a few other things to do on the boat and trailer. This weekend will be great for that.

If your having issue getting on plane, get a stingray “whale tail” aka cavitation plate. They make them for small motors like yours. It can make a big difference if you’re loaded down.
