I have never seen the "crappie fishing gnat" before being on this forum, and I am very intrigued to say the least. I noticed that on some pics, that they have thicker bodies, how do you accomplish that? And if anyone could post a pic of their version I would appreciate it.

Looks like building up the thread body and covering it with a UV resin would work.

I had thought about making a few and tipping with a minnow and casting with a slow retrieve, there is a small good crappie lake deep in the woods. And it has really thick brush, they would be inexpensive to make, so all I would lose would be the gnat and a minnow.

Yea. It’s using the thicker materials that causes the thicker head here,,,this is bucktail,,,I used bucktail a lot,,,it’s harder to work with but it looks much thicker in appearance then say feathers,,
The bucktail creates the thicker profile to tie on.
The body is just thread build up or that is what it looks like to me. If you use Softex (glue) you can build up with it some. I keep 2 jars of Softex here and one gets thick over time and one is thin, a newer jar. It's easy to use the thick one and make a body thick.
Am sure the previous suggestion works to, using the UV Glue! I also have some of that.
I can tell you my ant uses thread mostly!
