1987 Force 85hp motor, carburetor rebuild gonna happen.

Thill suggested I do so in my other "Project Boat" thread, and me thinks he's correct. On land the engine idled good, and seemed to run well, but once I put it in the water it was a whole other story. Only got 20 MPH out of the boat, and it shook like crazy. Must only be running on two cyls.

I mentioned I checked the compression in my other thread and all three were 125 psi, so that's the good news. Seems like nothing but a big lawnmower engine so I'm thinking the carb rebuilds will be easy enough.

FIL and MIL left today, so I can slow down a little now. My FIL is a machine. He worked my tail off. We installed ten windows, and 50 ft of concrete sea wall top! Plus a bunch of other things during his visit. And the "project boat" work too. Already replaced a bunch on the boat, fuel lines, relays, steering cable, remote control cables....all that while he was here too. Last year after his visit my back went out. This year my back seems to have survived the "Dew Machine" as I like to call him. That's because he drinks nothing but Mt. Dew, and all he does is "do". He never stops moving, does this, does that, just never stops. And when he finally does, it's usually nap time! lol

Anyway, now I can slow down a little, and take my time on this rebuild, to get this motor purring. Plus let the back recover from my FIL's onslaught. I can only hope I'm that energetic in twenty years. What a great guy.

He did have fun when I made him slow down and go fishing though. Seemed to really get into it this year.

That’s awesome that he has that much energy and go. It’s also awesome that you can do things together and especially go fishing. Good pics Ed.

I can only pray to have his health and vitality some years from now. Glad you shared some time on the water too. All work and no play makes Slab a dull feller dontcha know….

The Carbs were clean, no sludge, no varnish, clean as a whistle. Other than one float not being quite level, I'm not sure replacing gaskets and needle valves are gonna fix my problem. Off to replace the fuel pump bladder thingy. See if there's sumtin there to get'r fixed up and running good.

The stuff on the float is nothing, just the way it looks. Everything else about it looked new.

Hopefully adjusting the float fixed it, maybe one carb was not gettin fuel. But we'll replace the fuel pump bladder anywho.

Ahhh Haaa, hit that proverbial Ahh Haa moment. Diaphragm inside the fuel pump has a small tear.

Had that happen to a buddy's 175hp motor ... while we were on the water ... I had to lay on the back deck & keep pumping the bulb to keep the motor running so we could get to the ramp. :Doh:

Surprised it ran at all. Lol.
No synchronization needed on the carbs.
I’m sure you marked the carbs 1-3 and will put them back in order they came off.
The linkage rod will do all the synchronization needed.
New needle and seat?
They really are pretty simple.

Dang it, I tore that fuel pump gasket while putting it together. Stupid holes in the gasket are smaller than the bolts that go through it, so it spun and tore.

Chuck, after seeing the carbs so clean I looked at the paperwork that came with the boat. Turns out the carbs were were rebuilt 5 years ago. Doh, good news. So I inspected the seats and did not even fool with them. They looked fine. Easy enough to get to if I do have to address them. But the little clip that holds the tiny rubber seats down look challenging so I said heck with it, good enough.

I was all ready to give her a run, now I gotta wait for a gasket. Dang

From what I’m seeing in the picture of the carbs they need to be tore down and put in a ultrasonic cleaner.Cleaned and then rebuilt JMO

Had to do that to get back to the ramp with a pull start 25 Yamaha. If you didn't pump just right it would stall. Shoulder was trashed for weeks from restarting

Looks like you fellows had a ball, and yes I do think those carbs need some attention. Good luck with your project boat.

I had to rebuild my old Yamaha 2 stroke carbs about every couple years. I know what you are talking about the tiny wire holders for the needle. Thought I read you may be concerned about the float bowl level on one of the carbs?
Did you reset it?
I assume you know how.
The needles get dried out from time to time and become hard.
You probably know that you can check if the needle is seeding properly by slight air pressure even just blowing into them without using compressed air turning carb upside down while blowing.
Lots to type about carbs. I have built, re jetted hundreds over my lifetime.
Boats, vehicles, but mostly Harley’s.
I have a garage full of them with parts.
I don’t know squat about the newer fuel injected stuff. Lol

I need help, when you coming to Florida. lol. Yeah maybe I do a complete job next time and replace those seats. Easy enough to get at.

And maybe we're talking two different things. Yes there are tiny wire holders for the needle, but I'm talking about the seat for the needle, which is what I did not replace. They are rubber (green rubber) and held in place with a circular piece of wire. We're getting into the weeds, but if you look at 7:25 into this video you'll see what I'm talking about.

The other part of the reason I did not replace those is the stupid kits I bought did not include them. They looked fine to my eye. So hopefully the real problem I am having is with the torn fuel pump diaphragm which I found.

The needle valve seats are the green puck (with a hole in it) like things and the circle of wire that holds it in place way down in the hole.

I hope you are blowing out every little hole with carb cleaner then air.

a torn diaphragm can sure enough lead to troubled waters .....just saying :Rofl

When I first got the Other Woman I paid a shop to tear down and replace the needles and seats and any other parts that would become suspect after many years of sitting in used. They took off the bowls, blew them out with carb cleaner and replaced the bowl gaskets, called it done. The second mechanic I took it to had to do them properly and my issues disappeared. The issues they created along with a few other items made me wonder if I hadn’t bought into something I should have left alone. The second mechanic, Buddy who’s now gone from us, took care of my boat as it was his own and I had no issues other than normal wear and maintenance for the ten years I owned the boat. My thought is to do whatever you spend the time to tear into complete and mark it off the list of possible gremlins. So I’m guessing that you’ll open the holes before resetting the gasket this time. Dremel tool maybe? I’m patiently awaiting fish pictures, I won’t lie.

I see what you are talking about. Looks like a little snap ring that holds the seat in place. Use a pick to remove and a tiny socket to replace.

So why is long before an update. While putting the fuel pump together I tore the gasket and had to get a new one. Since I was ordering a new one anyway I bought new valves and screen and other gaskets as well. Fuel pump is now rebuilt too. Yay

And I fired her up with the hose on the muffs. Ran great. Idles way too high now so I backed off the idle screw link 3/4 of an inch and she ran wonderfully. On the water might be another story but I'm pleased so far. I'll be putting her in the water in the next day or so. Awaiting another part I wanna install before doing so just cause it'll be easier to install on dry land. Hopefully it comes tomorrow and we'll get her wet again. Yay

So here's the latest. I am all excited, she's running great on land, I bring the boat to the launch ramp, dumped her in the water. And there it sat! :Doh:

Unbelievable. I live about a mile from the boat ramp, ain't far. What can go wrong in a mile. Well, you've heard the saying if it can go wrong it will!

Turns over great, but nothing. Just like the lanyard is pulled. Like there be no sparky sparky.

So I look it over, sit on the back seat over the engine, with the cover off. And this guy takes a picture of me doing so. He laughed and said, wow, now I know what that back seat is made for! lol We had a laugh.

Anyway, boat goes back on trailer, I park it in driveway, get wifey outside to turn her over so I can put my tongue on the spark plug wire to see if there really is no sparky sparky. And dang it, I don't die in agony, no sparky. No I didn't put my tongue on the wire, I stuck a screw driver in it, and held it up close to the sparky plug.

So ok now, for sure there ain't no sparky.

I check the net, get some tests to do, disconnect blue wire at the motor, and dang it if she don't fire right up. She needs an ignition switch. Now here I sit, waiting for an ignition switch from Amazon, one day delivery, will be here tomorrow. To lazy and tired to go to local Marina and buy one, besides it'd be twice the price. I got other things I can work on, on the boat anywho.

Better to figure it out now and replace worn/bad parts with good ones. Be thankful you discovered this at the ramp and not several miles up the lake.

Keep after it.

I had a '76 HydraSports with a Johnson 135 that didn't want to run right at first. Took a bit of doing to get the bugs worked out. She was cold natured to start, and it took a while to crack the code. Once I replaced the bad parts and got it fired up, she'd run all day with no trouble.
