Saw it. Guess less successful fishermen like me that eat our catch have something going for us after all!
Interesting read. Have to see how it shakes out

As they say suggest and how times have changed years ago the best they could test was parts per thousand now parts per million +. So more is going to show up when they start looking at these minute parts. We don`t know how much has always been there as the testing is getting more and more finite.
I know that some people make light of these articles sometimes but it is a real problem. I’m in the groundwater and water industry. PFAS is a serious problem in United States because there is no way to get rid of these chemical compounds out of drinking water other than filtration. The filters can remove the PFAS but then you have to dispose of the PFAS and there’s nowhere that you can dispose of it in a safe manner excepting waste drums. The problem has been manifesting itself even in drilling water wells now, and having a contamination several hundred feet down in aquifers, making some water undrinkable, unusable for agriculture processes, or watering livestock. In closing, these chemicals are forever chemicals, because there is no known scientific process to break the compounds down into biodegradable, or organically soluble compounds that can be disposed of properly. Proper care of our waterways is very important to the human civilization and the world.

I don’t make light of those articles. In TN TWRA has for many years put out fish contaminate warnings for each body of water…if there are problems in it…and which specie are affected. I took them at their word. Growing up in Mid TN the area was full of chemical plants. For many years they dumped into our waters. Some of them will never be clean again and some have come a long way to getting clean. As a matter of fact from West to East TN chemical pollution has been a problem for decades. A few lakes were lucky enough to not have any industry near them. But as the saying goes “We all live down stream”.

I would bet not near as bad as the chemicals you eat everyday!!!
I'll continue to eat crappie. Everybody has to die of something. Might as well make something good.
You all must be younger. I remember ending up in the hospital after swimming in a river behind my Aunts house in Wisconsin, the Wisconsin River. River was polluted with chemicals dumped by factories. Clean Water Act later and every state has a Department of Natural Resources to monitor pollutants in our waters. Illinois includes safe eating limits as part of their Fishing Regulations.
We go to great lengths on the fish we actually eat to make sure they come from places that have water supplies that avoid cities and industries and even agriculture as well . I have long suspected and also read many articles that indicate most larger water body fish have high levels of something not good in them.
In some cases it is a known chemical of concern and in others it is quite obscure. We consume so many chemical additives daily it is staggering to imagine. So many things deemed "safe" back when are now considered highly toxic. We rarely eat beef at our house because of what is commonly done in the cattle industry here in the USA , many countries won't import our beef . We raised as few cows back when and after I saw and read about the things "recommended " to feed them for quick growth, that was it for me.
This article does not surprise me in the least and simply reinforced my want to let fish go ....just saying :highfive
It is terrible what has been done to our food supply
Medications as well. Even drywall
Didn’t see the article but don’t doubt it for a second. Here in the NE MANY rivers, streams, etc are ruined forever as far as edible fish go. The Delaware, my home Neshaminy creek are polluted with heavy metals ,fertilizer runoff, and in the case of my creek PFOS. Even pristine looking streams in the poconos are very fishable, but don’t try and eat them. That said, there has been a lot of effort to clean things up, but the damage has been long done.:banghead

Growing up in an area that has dealt with a big fiasco of industrial waste in the air, water, and soil, I don’t really worry about fish being contaminated. If the fish are contaminated, what about everything from the source to the water? If the fish are contaminated, everything in between them and us is contaminated. There are theoretically bigger fish to fry at that point.
Here’s a transcript of a 2002 subcommittee meeting in DC about the effects of Monsanto dumping PCBs in their landfill site in Anniston, AL if anyone is interested.

Ignorance is bliss lol. In all seriousness thanks for sharing. I personally believe there is only one permanent solution to this problem and He’s coming sooner then we think. In the meantime I’ll have to enjoy a nice plate of crappie from time to time it’s much better than when I felt the need for reaching for my dip can.

When I was a kid swimming in the Mississippi around the ferry in Algiers we were catching large grass shrimp to catfish with. Well when you got out of the water you had a "Coating" on you that took soap and water to wash off. From the late 60's to now on the Gulf Coast waters including New Orleans our rivers are the cleanest I have seen in my lifetime. The HILL is a climate - hair on fire - E-magazine who wants to take away your outboard motors too, no lead heads, no monofilament line, etc. I would not put it past them to push this as all you have to do is read their daily bilge to understand they have a motive behind the story. I did the "HARVARD Study" so did my brother, he has eaten fish out of Lake Pontchartrain, Pearl River, Hopedale, etc 2-3 times a week for 45 years. Me maybe 2-3 times a month till the last few years. The Harvard Study took locks of participants hair and test it for Mercury and other chemicals. He came back almost clean (we did grow up in New Orleans), Me I was loaded with Mercury and other chemicals were present. The Difference, I ate a pile of Sushi every a week.
am pretty sure me is a chemical cocktail as well , been eating fish out of waters all over the place for many moons , but there is good news on the hair sample testing, I can't spare enough of them these days to get it done ....
no worries though DDT almost killed off all the eagles and when we banned its use they slowly came back, the bad news , them folks south of the border spray it all over bananas they send up here to feed us and the kids , the good news , we dont lay eggs , no worries right ....:Rofl
Bud you have every bit the talent Senator Kennedy from Louisiana has getting to the point on a subject. Well said!
Back a few years ago , here in Georgia, it was PCB’s , Polychlorinated biphenyls .
From what I remember , when they tested the fish ,they would grind up the whole fish , then test .
The state recommended removing the skin , bones , and fatty tissue, (the red meat ) before cooking any fish caught in certain lakes , rivers , and creeks . And also recommended reducing the amount of fish eaten.
They also recommended eating smaller fish such as crappie and bluegill .
Nothing better than a plate of crappie and some sweet tea, then finish it off with a pinch of Copehagen long cut original. Life is good!

Not according to the fisheries folks here in Texas , the head honcho and myself had a long chat about some of the prettiest crappie in these parts and he said you couldn’t even pay him cash to eat one from where I was ketchn them .
Told me looks are VERY deceiving and even though they appear really healthy it was not the case.
My question was why the fish in the lake were ok , but not the fish in the river below the lake. He told me the lake fish got a lot lower dose of chemotherapy due to the higher water volume and the fish in the river got highly concentrated levels due to less dilution and way more different chemical cocktails coming off the streets and other run offs that go directly into the river .
One of favorite creeks run right thru the middle of Dallas, Texas and has water treatment plant 200 yards from my favorite fishing hole. Further down the creek their is a huge shopping mall 300 yards from the creek. During the spring when the creek is high with flow I can catch 100 white bass a day a couple of 5lb plus hybrids. Using white bass filets in fish tacos is heaven on earth. I am one who believes that if it is in moderation it can't end your life sooner than you expect.
I'm in the medical field...so I read clinical studies all the time.
The latest, linked to the concentration of pollutants in commonly consumed seafood, specifically fish, suggests there is a very strong correlation between a diet high in wild caught fish and malignant melanoma.
It’s like the applesauce thing , as a kid we were fed it by the gallons with all the pediatricians saying how great it was for kids
They sprayed the trees to get the apples to ripen evenly, it was considered a non toxic chemical ….
UNTIL you heated said chemical in the applesauce manufacturing and it transformed the non toxic chemical into a well known carcinogen….
Now all the pediatricians recommend you don’t feed it to kids ….:banghead
And …Sweet and low is safe too ….right :Rofl
Everything in moderation, right. They say too much water can kill you. I think that's called being drowned though. :banghead
I make this crappie recipe in moderation and it makes me happy.

I don't catch enough fish to ever have to worry about a threshold limit of toxins.
