If you feel it up to much it will sink.. lol. I use a power pole .. but a drift sock might help you or slow you down.

Never, have I thought of putting water in the boat. What happens when the water gets rough at a moment's notice, or you have another emergency and need to move quickly? Maybe there is someone here that has more experience than I do, that can speak on this. Just not something that I would do.
A wake boat could make that turn nasty quickly
i use a drift sock in back mushroom 15 lb weight hanging over front 2/3 ft down
Can't say I haven't thought about it :yikes ... even my 16' Bass Boat gets pushed around quite a bit in the wind. Heck, it'll drift off a spot in no wind at all :Doh:
But, no .... not worth it, for all the reasons already stated.

I did it a time or two when I fished out of a 14’ flat bottom but just put a inch or so I the bottom to keep it from bouncing so bad… since I upgraded to a tracker 175 my favorite thing to use is chains. Drift socks work ok I just prefer the chains as I can add too it to slow it down more or less

I also own a 24' Supra surf boat. Before yall get the pitch forks out....lol...I only use it on main lakes. Along with the integrated bags in the boat we also have the option to add more water.. they are called Fatsacs.

Put as much weight in the front of your boat as possible. If you have a 24v trolling put both batteries in the front. Put bags of sand in front if you can.
NEVER intentionally is my thought on this subject , and if all else fails, head into the wind , its kinda like hunting , keep the wind in your face :highfive

Water trucks have baffles to keep the water from all going to one side and flipping the truck.
I don't know if you have a bass boat or a jon boat. But for me, adding water is a no no. Think about what can I do, and then think about all the what if's. 1st-I would keep my fuel tank full, fill up the live well, if trolling motor is 24volt move those batteries to the front. If you still need weigh, add something like 25pound anchors. Something that is stable all the time. dumb bells. That way if you got in trouble with waves or storms you could throw then overboard. Water in your hull is unstable, It will run to the lowest point faster than you can pump it out. Adding water in a jump start to being swamped.
A possible option could be, have your boat Rhino lined? That will give you some additional weight. Plus, give you some longevity, protection from rusted rivits,, etc.

Being a Walleye fisherman on lakes and rivers boat control is huge, normally done with a front trolling motor. After a few hundred hours you get the hang of it ( not as much work ) . When wind is blowing up river pushing up river faster then current down I will use a drift sock off the back of the boat keeping the bow up river using trolling motor to control drift and direction.
I see it all the time boats getting pushed around from either wind or current with the operator having no clue on how to control the boat. Or put in the work to keep the boat under control for what the fisherman wants versus mother natures idea.

I would add weight by using sandbags. They are cheap and if you have to toss them you want be out of much.

What you’re talking about is adding ballast. Liquid ballast needs to be contained so it doesn’t get out of control, like by all getting on one side when the boat leans. Adding water is a bad idea.
Is a spot lock trolling motor in your budget?
