IMO ya can’t beat an old timer pocket knife.
Old Timer | Pocket Knives, EDC Knives, Fixed Blade Knives
A lot of good choices out there. I’d start by considering price point and then look at options from some reputable manufacturers. Kershaw, Buck, Benchmade, Spyderco, Gerber, SOG all make good quality knives.
As has been said look at price point…decide if it is important from where a knife is made. Many well known brands of knives are no longer made in USA. Old Timer…as many other knife makers…will have you think that their knives are made in USA when it is only the blade that is made in USA. The rest of the knife and assembly is in China. Even some German brands have done the same. Many Boker knives are now made in China. This is not necessarily a bad thing but you have to look at each knife on its own. I really like the BenchMade and Kershaw knives…but some Kershaw knives are now made in China. But easy to find ones that are fully made in USA. Best of luck in your search. Nothing like a good pocket knife.

I am a case fan. I have been carrying this mini trapper for 28+ years now. It has seen a fish scale or two through the years! It has been in my pocket every day since the day of purchase.

I carry a skeleton frame Gerber. I lose pocket knives regularly, so I bought 4 of them the last time I found some. My daddy used to say, a man's not fully dressed without a pocket knife.
"Pocket knife" don't leave home without 1.... my dad, grandpa and uncle all carried case knifes in their pockets, they are among my most prize possessions now that they are gone
I've carried a bunch of different pocket knives since I was a pre-teen (el cheapo China made ones). Still have 3 or 4 of them left, tucked away in a drawer. But what I've carried for the last several decades is a SOG Flash II (Christmas gift from my fishing/hunting bud, cjpar3)
An old 3blade Frontier (no origin stamp), a single blade Buck (Bill Dance signature), and a 2blade Buck (Wally Marshall signature + note from & signed by Wally on the box) are always close at hand when I'm home. :ThumbsUp

With you all talking about knives, I thought I would show you a set left to me by my father before his passing years ago! I remember the day he bought this set.
It was a display at a lumber company that sold knives behind the counter! If you read the label, it states “sample”!
I’ve been offered 5k for it, but can’t seem to let it go.

That is a beautiful set
I have carried a Kershaw Leek for many years. The latest one is a composite blade. They make for a very nice every day carry knife.
Back when I was researching and deciding what my latest edc pocket knife would be I went with the Kershaw Link if I remember correctly. The main deciding factor was it’s actually Made in USA.

Also the other knife which had the good steel wasn’t available….lol.
I too have my grandfather and dads knives they carried everywhere everyday. Valuable to me with many memories with each.
have not seen a faster or sharper instrument of destruction in a small package.
loves wet work is my native American name....:Rofl
thank me later if you are lucky enough to own one as well .....
second Kershaw is me , mighty fine blades :highfive
I have carried a kershaw leek for over 20 years, after my neighbor got his jacket caught in the pto of his hay baler and was able to use one to cut himself free, pretty beat up, a few days in the hospital but still here. I always have the assisted opening knife on me, and has come in handy. Made in USA on the blade

Some real nice choices there. Probably consider budget for the gift and go from there.
Bob
I’ve been carrying an Ontario RAT-II for several years for my edc. It’s a decent budget knife, certainly not a prized collectible to hand down to the grandkids, but works well for an edc to beat up. The AUS-8 steel takes an edge relatively easily and holds an edge relatively well too. Requires a bit more touching up than a nicer knife with better steel, but again works well for an edc to beat up. Someday I’ll splurge for a nicer knife or two to pass along to the grandkids. Good luck in your search
I have several "Case" knives. Solid, good looking and functional. Good knife for the price. That said , my every day knives are Bucks. I will post up some pics. The first are some of my Case knives. They usually are not out of the box. Second are two I really like. The Wally Marshal was a gift and the Jeff Gordon was a dollar flea market find.(Third pic of some Jeff gordon fish baits. Bought for 3 dollars at a store closing. Just because, I know they not knives.) The fourth pic are my everyday Bucks. By the way, the cheapest Case shown was $69 and the cheapest buck was $24.

Gerber, Case, Sears and Buck. All made in USA!Attachment 442813
Get a Buck 110 or 112. American made, great steel. Look into slim model if you want it to be paper thin. I really like my 110 slim pro. Pro designation gets you the better steel, but bucks 420HC steel on regular models is really good as well.

I have a spyderco para 3. Pretty cool little knife.
Made in the US too!
Need to get me a Leek. I had one years ago as a kid but lost it. I have another Kershaw assisted opening blade that has been very good to me, carried for 5+ years but doesn’t hold an edge well enough for me to carry daily anymore. It did get me good at sharpening though lol. Been carrying A Buck 110 for a couple years now, but do miss the flickability of a nice assisted opening blade.

D,
I’ve never seen a bone handled sodbuster. I have carried Case Sodbuster Jrs for the past 30 years and will till the die I go to the big pond in the sky. Good looking collection.
I have carried...and lost; a case 4 blade, a case coke bottle, and at least three case peanuts. I finally got a Benchmade mini griptillian with a pocket clip and have managed to keep it for the last ten years.
Smitty hit the nail on the head. No matter what brand you buy, look for stainless steel or it stands a chance of rust. I’ve had many case knives and been happy with every one of them. The Case brand mini trapper is useful and versatile. I had several at one time and wanted my daughter to have a guitar to play for my granddaughter so I put three of them in my pocket and went to the pawn shop. I left with one of the knives and a good guitar. They hold their value is my point. I would be surprised if you weren’t happy with it.
My great Uncle was president of Camillus knives back when , he had 2 shoe boxes full of assisted opening knives sent in for repair that he was not allowed to return because of the ole switch blade laws enacted after they sold them .....
not kidding either....
Yeah, I remember the switchblade law from way back when. Thing is, I had one when I was a teen. Not the Italian Stiletto type, though, just the push a button and the blade opened out type. Even it was a el cheapo, and I remember it fell apart after I threw it into a tree. The blade stuck into the tree, and everything else just flew apart. But, hey .... I was Boss Gangsta in the 'hood (for about a week) :Rofl
I hav good old German Puma’s, stag handle Case’s, auto Benchmade’s. I carry a Victorinox Recruit. It is my favorite all around everday carry pocket knife by a mile!!
CASE "CONGRESS " . 4 BLADE . ONE FOR ROPE , LETTERS, FINGER NAILS AND FRUIT . BUY ONCE CRY ONCE . Attachment 442870
Nice case
if this thread don't die I will dig in my gun safe and show ya"ll a knife that came with 2 air force plaques about it's combat missions in desert storm , bought it from a fella that was friends with the pilot . thought at the time 250 bucks was a really stupid high price , but wanted it terribly bad as soon as I held it.
so get this , it is said to be able to pierce body armor if placed on it and deployed and is a bit tough to "cock" as it pulls back like an automatic handgun to load up.
now here is the really cool part , called a few high end knife shops right before the purchase and told one 250 and he responded that 1250 was a great deal and I should grab it ,as they were rare and typically sold for 2500 if you can find one ! :yikes
still not kidding around is my native american name :Rofl
the auto benchmade is a fine pc of cutlery , my police buddy has one , nice knife for sure
tried to get mom to sneak one in from Europe years ago and the knife dealer made it clear customs wouldn't let her bring it to the us ,,,,,:banghead
back then only the police were allowed to carry such stuff .....
