Ready to try some Wintertime Slabs!

Got #3 with the bow last night! Been after this nice 6 point for a few weeks now. Ready to take the new Ranger 188P out for her first wintertime trip here on Nimrod. Lake is a little low and not many folks fishing but I still want to go on one of these sunny days.
We’re going to Bass Pro this weekend to look at some cold weather clothing. I used to have a wind proof hoodie with a nylon outer years ago that I got from Bass Pro. It was awesome on those sunny winter days. Like anything good it was discontinued. Wish I could find another one.

Congrats on the buck. Bundle up on those winter trips. Best time to fish since hardly nobody else out on lake.

Nice! Amazing to think how far winter/rain gear has come. Used to have to bundle up so much could hardly cast!

Took the pic at night. Shot him about 4 in the evening. I think I'm getting too old (62) to be trying to get them out by myself any more. I've got a blockage of muscle in my heart and I get winded real easy exerting myself. My Son and Daughter in Law normally help me but they're down in Carlisle guiding Specklebelly goose hunts. Passed a small buck this evening because I didn't feel like I wanted to try to get him out by myself.

They don't drag as well for me as they did when I was in my 20's :biggrin

I definately know what you're talking about Jack. I had to put my basket on the truck because I didn't think I could get him in the bed by myself!

I quit dragging deer out several years ago. I now carry an old pack frame with ropes and a set of block and tackle. When I shoot one now I just hang him up where he lays skin it out, quarter it up and pack it out usually in one trip. I leave the hide, guts, skin and bone there. When you do it that way you leave 2/3rds of the weight there.

If it is not where I can get to it with a vehicle , I also skin and quarter mine. I take an old Army duffle bag with knives , paper towels and plastic bags . Leave guts , hide and most of the bones for the Buzzards and Coyotes . Suspect the feral hogs get their share where I hunt . I am getting to old to drag them a mile or two . I get my lifetime license's next year but also have a bad back . Most this year only needed dragging a yards .

My son skins and quarters his sometimes depending on where he's hunting. I usually go get my deer cart. But there are huge differences in deer carts. First off, you want one where you can balance the deer so as to not have much weight at the handle. I have two different carts but my favorite one has pneumatic tires and can also be hooked up to my electric Rambo hunting bike. I find myself passing more and more smaller bucks bowhunting these days as all I can think of at the moment of truth is how much work it'll be to get it out.
