Dumb Question

Yesterday I got to the lake and began fishing my first location.
As usual, fish everywhere as expected.
First drop, fish on.
I thought oh no, gonna be a BAD day from my old bass fishing days.
But no, I continued to catch fish for a solid 2 hours on almost every drop. They were actually chasing my jig about 2-3 feet and choking it.
And then they stopped.
Changed jig colors about 5-6 times.
Moved to my 2 location and again, lots of fish and maybe caught 1 or 2.
3rd location with the same results.
First experience with this happening and wondering why.
Information: they were pulling the lake and appeared it was down 6 inches to 1 foot from the time I started and when I left.
Thanks for any input or experiences others have had of similar nature.

I don't think there is an answer. I've had them just quit biting. Sometimes color or size change keeps them going, sometimes not. No rhyme nor reason sometimes to these finicky fish.

You ain’t never gonna figure the reason for that…and no one else is either. It happens…especially with crappie. I’ve placed myself in riprap on a bank and caught 15 fish in row…then then nothing for next 7 hours. Then catch another 15 to finish my limit. Experienced this many times…and same fishing from a boat. Years ago a friend brought an Aqua View to a spot where we bank fish and slay the crappie by the tons. We were catching on every cast…then they stopped. His thinking was they left…my bet was they were still there. Dropped the camera down and crappie were everywhere. No matter what we tried not a hit….then 4 hours later limit out. For the past 7 weeks been trout fishing on a gin clear river. They do the same thing….but not as often as crappie do it. Seeing multiple trout swarming around your lure yet not take it is very frustrating. Then a few hours later a trout on every cast. Crappie are gonna turn and turn off….no matter color or lure. When they are in the shut off mode you just have to wait em out. Up until about 4 years ago I would wait them out. I no longer spend 10 hours on the water. Now a days if it don’t happen in about 4 hours I’m gone.

In my experiences ... it can turn the bite off. Falling water can force them deeper and/or away from the bank. It can make them lite biters during their location change, too. Slow falling water levels may not cause a drastic change in the feeding behavior, but a fast drop in water levels certainly can. Lots of other factors could also be at play, also.

I bet the barometric pressure changed and gave them lockjaw.

I've had days where a spot only produced a fish or two and you had to move on. Come back, and get another fish or two. Other days where you could fish the same spot all day with non-stop action. It just happens.

No clue , but for sure seen it a zillion times . Dropping water levels that quickly could for sure be the culprit though.
Or it could have been that coupled with 27 other variables. Was 2 fish from a limit of 25 monsters one afternoon waiting for my buddy who was running late , when he arrived we went right back and struggled for the rest of the visit and left with 27.
To this day it sticks in my memory, they bit Every drop and where just whoppers in herds on timber and even though they were still there when we got back a few minutes later , it was like there wasn’t a fish down there :dono

A big problem with where I fish is there are zillions of small fish everywhere and I really mean everywhere.
The keeper rate is about 1 out of 10+ fish caught.
Great place to practice and try new stuff but I fish for sandwiches.
Guess it could always be worse.
I’m not complaining.

My Daddy told me years ago on a pull that hard that they go into survival mode for fear of getting stranded. They head for deeper water. Everything I fish is watershed. One tip would be to find spots on the bank where the water is actually flowing backwards. They will wait for food to come to them and they can rest there.

My Dad was a big time bird hunter and didn’t really fish much.
But I do remember him saying,,,,,
“ if you’re meant to hang, you’ll never drown”…..
Guess that applies to a lot of things in life including fishing.

I was fishing there Thursday and it seemed if there was a bunch of fish together they wouldn’t bite you had to find small schools like 4 or 5 fish and they would bite. They would be close to the bigger school of fish. Not really an answer to your question just what we saw.

If we are fishing tide here on the Coast falling water they bite best but as soon as it turns, most times, just head in, they pull the same lock-jaw stunt.

The bad thing about Taylorsville is the abundance of 9 7/8 inch fish!!
The lake fishes well and I ALWAYS catch fish. Great place to practice Livescope skills.

:Rofl .... yeah, but it was the same back when the size limit was 9" :Doh: ... you could catch a ton of 8 7/8" fish. Then all of a sudden people started catching 11-14" fish in numbers and the KDFWR decided to up the size limit to 10" :bash (and now here we are, again :Doh: )

There is a bunch of fish in the 9/12 to 93/4 range for sure. You wouldn’t happen to be the guy I spoke to at the ramp. He mentioned he was a retired police officer in a white Denali with a ranger boat

Yes you does. I’d say it has to do with the amount of pressure that lake gets. As soon as a fish hits legal size it’s taken.

I’ve only fished Taylorsville for the last 5-6 years. Has the limit always been 15?

Best I remember, yes, it has always been 15/day/person. It's only a 3000 acre lake, opened in 1983 ... and the first couple of decades since opening you'd be lucky to catch a 9" Crappie that wasn't paper thin. I've fished it since it opened, but spent a lot of those early years Bass fishing it because of the poor condition of the Crappie back then.

No rhyme or reason to most any fish. Just try to be there when they are biting'. Sign at one of my old beach piers said- You should have been here yesterday!

Amazing. Like a giant underwater bell rings, and they start biting or stop. How every fish in a huge lake can all act in concert is crazy.

Sometimes it's just time of day. We fished a lake for a week straight and learned quickly after 1 pm just put the boat up. We hammered fish until 1pm then they were done!

The lake I fish is the premier musky lake in Ohio. When I have been catching and they just shut off, sometimes the reason is a big ol' musky has moved into the area and the bite stops. Big channels or a flatheads can do that too. The crappie go immobile, belly to the bottom and don't move. Kind of like a squirrel who sees a hawk and they freeze on the side of the tree pointing downwards till the threat has passed. Could be a number of things.
