My personal rule is water temps 70 degrees and up for cranking. I know some folks who catch them year round. Actually caught my personal best early in the spring when nothing seemed to be working. As a last resort, I threw out some cranks and caught several 2+ pounders and a 3 3/4 pound fish.

thanks for the info
I kind of go by how deep the fish are holding and swap back and forward.
Crankbait bite was good this past Wednesday. Water surface temp was 82-84 degrees.
The last several years, here on Ky/Barkley lakes, I’ve started pulling cranks when the surface temp was barely above 50 degrees. In the fall I pull cranks until the surface temp is in the mid 50s.
When the surface temp is below low 60s, I slow down to 1.4mph.

I learned a lot about pulling cranks from Doug and it’s now my preferred method to fish. Watching and learning from Doug has really showed me how effective it can be, to learn the lake contours and where structure is that I might miss otherwise. To me it’s relaxing until you get tangled but he showed me how to avoid that and how to deal with it.
