New rod tryout @ Town pond

First off , I know the new rod doesn’t fit my normal equipment collection.
It’s an 8’ 5wt . Heavier and longer than I usually fish .
But , Moonlit had a $50 off sale and I liked the color :) ; and I didn’t have an 8’ 5wt in fiberglass.
The rod feels heavy , I expected it to , I’m used to fishing one and two weight rods .
But , the rod will flat shoot a 5wt line out 60-70’ without as much false casting and effort that I use trying to cast my ultralights.
We had a good rain last evening and this morning the sky was overcast permitting me to fish the bridge side of the pond .
First cast with the new rod and a black/chartreuse spider and I’m hooked up . The rod was bending 3/4 of the way in a nice arc . In now time I landed my first fish , a nice 8” bluegill.
I caught three on the spider and switched to a woolybooger to try to entice a bass to eat .
No bass , but I caught two more bluegills, including the nice 9”er that has the deformed mouth that I’ve caught five times now . Catch and release works !
I was happy to see his lips were healing.
I put up the new rod and got out a 6’1” 1/2wt and caught two more gills . Seven total in an hour and fifteen minutes.
The fish looked a little stressed, I’m guessing from the heat the last few months .
The new rod is a keeper and will be a good boat rod , once I start getting my boat out this fall .
Here’s most of the catches , they were all nice fish this morning.

Nice post and great looking fish, gill. Your new rod looks like a keeper, and I have one glass 7(!) weight that still gives a good bend on a decent size pan!

I enjoyed fishing with the 8’ 5wt while I was using it . But the next day , that hour of casting it felt like I’d fished all day with it .
Put a hurting on my right hand , arm , and shoulder.
Today I took a 6’3” 1/2 weight . Guess you could call it a 1 1/2 weight .
Anyways , a lot lighter in the hand and easier to lift the line off the water and easier to roll cast .
I fished a little over an hour , mainly by the bridge with an overcast turned to partly cloudy befor heading home .
I caught three bluegills, decent size ones , but had at least five that just came unhooked during the battle to get them in . It happens some days .
Hope you guys enjoy me sharing my daily adventures chasing the fish I’ve loved since I was a little kid.

I own two of those seven footers :) . Every time BPS would change the Dogwood Canyon , I had to buy the new version and try it out . Fun rods !

First, nice looking new rod, even if it is beefy. Second, I’d be happy with any of those fish. I like catching fish but I like it better when they’re decent sized. Third, I enjoy your posts of your daily exploits. Makes me jealous you getting to fish most days. Pretty much done with the boat mods and wiring so I hope to get out soon if I feel up to it. Keep after em, my recent trips are through y’all.
