Other than color, What are the differences between the red and bronze hooks?

Some people believe it looks like a flared gill of a bait fish. I don't feel the hook color makes a difference though.

It's funny that it's advertised as blood, gills, injured minnow.....but yet they sell Red line that's invisible to fish?
My understanding is this; in the UV spectrum red is the first color to get washed out to something like gray. So it isn’t completely useless as some might think. I’ve tied jigs for bluegill that worked OK but became a hot ticket when I added a short piece of red wool on the tail of the tie. But you know me and I always have a story to give. TJ Stallings was a friend and worked for several companies in the fishing industry. I met him in his dads tackle store on Michigan ave in Orlando when I was late teens or early twenties. I never knew TJ to boast or talk trash so I believe this 100%.
It was after closing and TJ and his dad Tim were finishing up and his dad told him to come here, I have something to show you. They walked to the aquarium that was in the store with a couple of small bass and a few bluegill of assorted varieties, maybe a Warmouth or two. Tim carried a small penlight and some colored cellophane to put over the lens. Turning out the overhead lights he turned on the penlight and shined it in the tank. No change in the fish. He put the green over the lens, same thing. Yellow too, no change. But when he put the red over the lens and made a red dot on the bottom of the tank, every fish instantly came over to look and see what was going on. Move the light and the fish followed. There’s something to this said Tim, and they finished closing and went home. In his later years TJ became big inTTI Blakemore, the Roadrunner people, also selling tru turn hooks also available in red. I’ve used red in many different fashions and believe that it helps tip the table in my favor. I think that every major tackle maker uses red as a trim color on lots of their baits, I don’t think it’s coincidence.
The only downside to red hooks is that they are first plated gold or the red wouldn’t stand out. After some use the red can be scratched off and you’re left with a gold hook.
I add red highlights to some of my crankbaits with fingernail polish and it helps improve strike ratio. I get more hits on the baits with Red than those without.

I have used red hooks for a long time now. First for minnows and then red sickle hook jigheads. They have worked great for me
Ive heard some pro crappie guys swear on red colored soft plastics, and since then Ive added red tubes to my arsenal but haven't given them much chance yet.
Fishermen like them so much we also have chartreuse hooks .
I use them but I am not sure they have improved my catch rate.
I'll say this & that i love a black/red spinnerbait for smallmouth in bright moonlight & also junebug with red glitter or a redbug baby brush hogs & big plum apple ribbon tail worms. My buddy didn't believe me on the spinnerbait thing until i showed him one bright light night. I gave him the black/red one & i threw black/blue. He was inside towards the bank & i was on the outside. He was catching some big smallmouth & i never got a hit. Then i told him to switch & i got bit on the outside & he never got hit. He wasn't sure yet but after i showed him the second time he always has a black/red tied on in bright moonlight. It absolutely works in my opinion. Now i have to make up some red crappie baits to try.
I like using red hooks, I use them a lot, gives me confidence when I got one tied on, because I have caught so many fish on them.
we as humans don't see the world like a fish and often think certain colors help or don't and I have read what Skeet said before as well .
red is supposed to go away first , but that is based on human vision , have seen red line kill a bite before for sure and have seen red lures ketch fish better than others , bet fish see red different than us is me ....just saying
there is only one way to be positive for sure though , thru a fisheez eyes ....
strap one on and let's do this .....:Rofl
I’m all for trying that lol. I was about to buy some more jigs and found myself looking for red hooks. I have no idea why, other than catching the fisherman not the fish lol

I also believe there is something to using red in every presentation. I also believe it imitates blood from a wounded baitfish or the red from a gill flaring open. A few years ago I found some red and silver Mylar in the party section at Dollar Tree. The stuff was pretty and almost indestructible so I stated adding a tiny bit of the material on my fishing line above the hook. I think it and "Slab Sauce" really helps attract the fish to my presentations.
Here is a photo and a video of what I am talking about.

I know the theory is that the red hook imitates blood and wounded bait fish. But i'm not sure how that fish really perceive it. What I do know is that red hooks can and will trigger more strikes. Is it all the time? I can't say for sure. But I have two anecdotal instances that have made me a believer in red hooks. The first was probably 15 years ago fishing the crappie dock at my local lake. I didn't have a boat at the time so was limited to fishing these types of docks. There were probably 20 other fishermen fishing all over the dock. I was getting bites and catching fish probably 5 to 1 over anyone else in the dock. Several people wanted to know what I was doing different. The only difference in my presentation and theirs was that I was using red hooks. As an experiment I traded places with several anglers and always caught fish in the spots where they were getting few if any bites. The second was about 5 years ago fishing with a late friend of mine in his boat. We were both fishing minnows from the front deck. I caught 13 fish to his 4. Again, the only difference was the red hook. Again, this is just anecdotal information so take it for what its' worth. But now I fish red hooks with either jigs or minnows unless I just can't get them in the jig head I want to use.
been in a winter spot before where if the jighead wasnt pink you were in the audience and not the show.
likely imitating the pinked version of a dying shad is my thought and at another spot in the winter,if you didnt use a bg bleeding shad ,you got to watch them that was ketchn the fish with it , just saying .
Best I can figure- about 50 cents per pack! :Rofl
They are easier to find if you drop them in the grass:biggrin
Gotta git me some Red hooks size 4.

No advantage in my opinion . Why do Bass fishermen swear by red crank baits but say fish can't see red line ? Colors are to catch fishermen / sell more tackle :scratchhead
Orange smoked the other colors used yesterday by miles , but I am partial to orange , dont know exactly why , but it could be do to the way it hammers fish lips .....:Rofl
some times I believe that color is just a mental attitude of the fisherman/woman that's using it. Worms and minnows are all the same and have caught fish for more years than I've been around,80. However color has caught me to the point that I think I've got enough on hand, both hooks and baits, to start my own bait and tackle store. :Rofl
used to use red permanent marker on hard baits that didn't come with any on them , gills and belly , just saying
them same folks that say red goes away , say blue stays , just saying ......:Rofl
crappie eyes they say , see blue better for deeper than any other color .....:dono
no clue here but blue/chart has done well for me on occasion .
there are several versions of blue and chart considered to be go to colors in these parts :cheers2
We fishermen are pretty much gullible. For decades experts have claimed that red disappears in just a few feet of water. That the wave length of red gets absorbed.
I was snorkeling in the springs and had brought a bright red glass bead with me to test this theory. Hovering over a large hole 30 feet deep, I released it. I was able to watch it the whole way down, and could easily see it once it settled onto the bottom. The red was visible no problem at all. I have seen charts where red disappears within five feet. LOL
Surf fishermen still believe that a bright orange bead matches the egg sacks of sand fleas. That pompanyo see that orange and bite. Well I spent years trying to correct that one. Sand fleas stay pinned hard to the bottom, and you never see their orange eggs. So it is impossible for the fish to see bright orange and get tricked into thinking they found a sand flea with bright orange eggs. The only time you see the eggs is when you have them in hand and are putting them onto the hook. There is a flap you have to lift up to get a peak at the eggs.
I read here all the time that unpainted jig heads will out catch painted jig heads. Maybe so, but could that be because gray is a color, too ? I mean those unpainted heads have a color same as the others. Then the old ‘eyes - no eyes’ stuff flares up and that one has gotten me a few times. Of course you don’t need jig heads with eyes to catch fish. So what ? Will I add eyes to my jigs, or should I skip all that and go with a blind jig ? Total guess at this point. I choose eyes.
Then there is the Moon stuff and Solunar and things that allow us to so easily understand complex processes. We know so much about these stupid little fish. Yup- starting at 10:37 a.m. on Thursday the fifteenth, I will be tearing the fish up. Don’t go Tuesday, the fish will not be biting.
Then there is the fluorocarbon line disappears thing. It is carefully explained that flouro line, due to it’s molecular structure, puts on an invisibility cloak. Think about this for a second. If it’s molecular composition renders it invisible……. that would mean that 400 lb flouro leader material would also be invisible underwater. Do you think 400 lb flouro leader is invisible underwater ? Hmmmmmm…… maybe the best way to get some invisibility is to reduce line diameter, and save some cash buying line.
We hear things like- You should have been here yesterday. Yes, we should have been, but life got in the way…… we are here now ….. so now what ?
When I was a young man learning how to hunt deer, I was so jealous of the guys that always got a big deer every year. I thought man those guys know how to hunt. They must know how to find the best places to hunt. I bet they rattle horns and grunt call and use scents and decoys. Well turns out that I stopped thinking those thoughts when I discovered that they all had one thing in common. None of them had jobs. Yup, they could sit in their deer stands, anytime they pleased, and time spent was why they killed big deer.
Fishing is same same. If you are out there all the time you will learn some things about the fish. What their favorite colors are, which is far more important than what our favorite colors are. Maybe they stop biting after a cold front pushes through. Maybe they have moved clean across the lake in the dark of night. Maybe they feasted last night and have full bellies. How does one actually know these things ?
Like I said, we will believe in just about anything, if we believe it will help us catch some stupid fish. Gullible. I believe in UV light enhanced lures. Do I have anything to backup my preference ? Absolutely not. Will I continue to espouse the virtues of UV enhanced lures on this forum ? Absolutely I will.
I used to tell newbies to surf fishing when they asked for advice. Go make friends. Watch what the others are doing. Sure - reading on the webs is a huge help, but seeing what the locals are up to is priceless. The guy that always seems to have plenty of fish might not be the guy to emulate. He might just be the guy that gets to go all the time. For him, none of these things matter because he is out there on the days the fish are cooperating. The rest of us, what have lives, are the ones desperate to understand what cannot be understood. Some say confidence is key. No actually being out there fishing is key.
Then there is the all time favorite explanation about fish behavior. Being lucky. Yes, I know a few guys that can catch fish in a mud puddle in my driveway. Me….. I have to work hard as luck knows me not. I watched a man catch a four pound pompano using a bluefish rig and he didn’t even know what he had. Amazing thing that luck stuff.
Would I choose a hook simply based on it’s color ? Hmmmmm…… no I don’t think I would.
Well I hafta admit I buy just about every new gadjit that comes along including red Hooks [smile]

some of my buds like them there black nickel hooks , wonder if that has any play ....:Rofl
