Moving to Seattle Area Next Month

I will be moving to the Seattle area next month. Going to take me a while to adapt to that cold weather. But I will get to fish for native rainbow trout again, which I loved to do when I lived in El Paso and fished the New Mexico mountain lakes.

After spending a month researching it I have just about decided to make Lake Washington my new home lake. I will not know for sure until I am there and actually fishing it but it looks to be the best of the nearby freshwater lakes with the most marinas. I need a marina for my boat as it is just too hard for me to launch now.

It also appears to be a good crappie, rainbow trout, and walleye lake, my three favorite species of freshwater fish to eat. It also has several other species to catch from time to time to keep it interesting when the three chosen ones are bitting slow.

I thought about fishing Puget Sound instead of fresh water and may still fish it occasionally. But my pontoon is almost all aluminum, including the deck, so I would have to keep it painted each year plus pull it out of the water on a regular basis to clean it to prevent corrosion if I kept it at a slip in salt water. Which is more work than I want to do nowadays.

Besides I prefer to fish for crappie, rainbow trout and walleye over fishing for saltwater fish. I fished for saltwater fish for the 20 years I lived in Slidell, outside of New Orleans, and just prefer the freshwater fish.

The sad part about moving is all the good fishing buddies and friends I will be leaving behind.

That’s a big move EZ. My wish for you is contentment in your new surroundings. Reading your post I was thinking that you should maybe get a rod or two and hire someone to supply the boat. Lots less wear and tear on you and the rest of your gear. Good to hear that you’re looking forward to it. Always good stuff on the other end. God bless and be careful.

Good luck on your move. While in the service I was stationed at Ft Lewis. Being from the high desert, It was too wet for me...Seemed it rained some everyday. Now this was in 1981-19822. But it was green for sure...Seen a bumper sticker there that at the time I thought was spot on...Washington Ites don't suntan...They RUST!!!! All kidding aside, I really hope you like it.

Thank you. I appreciate your good wishes. While I would not made the move at this stage of my life if I had a choice, my wife and I have always loved the Seattle area. We tried to move there when we were younger but I could not get transferred there and could not find an equivalent job in that area.

My son-in-law was just transferred there by his company. At my age it is safer if I live in an area where one of our children live so I have a choice between Chicago, New York and Seattle. I don't like icy streets and frozen lakes so Seattle is my best option if I must move.

I appreciate your concern but the day I sell my boat will be the day I sign myself into a nursing home as I will no longer be able to take care of myself. :) But that is why I now try to find fishing buddies who are willing to fishing with me. It is safer with two people on the boat and it keeps my kids happier if they know I have somebody fishing with me. So they complain less about my being on the lake. Not that their complaints would stop me from fishing or taking trips when I want to do so. :)

I have some good fishing buddies and friends here in the DFW area, I expect to find some in the Seattle area once I am there. Crappie people are good people. :)

Any opened bottles of crappie nibbles laying around won't be any good on a long trip , H and I will be glad to dispose of them in the appropriate manner for ya, just saying.....:Rofl

Jeffery and I have been doing a good job using them up. But you and H have been missing in action lately.

Jeffery and I fished Thursday afternoon and Saturday afternoon last week. And yes, it was hot fishing in the afternoon.

Thursday I had a decent crappie fishing day for Lake Worth. I caught over a dozen crappie and a few sand bass. Seven of the crappie were over 11" but the biggest was only 12 1/4 inch. Jeffery only caught a couple of small crappie but he caught a lot of nice sized sand bass. We caught most of them at that one dock you showed me, the rest under the bridge when the heat became too much to ignore. Don't understand why the other docks aren't producing crappie.

Saturday was the reverse of action. I only caught 3 small crappie and couple of small sand bass. Jeffery caught 7 crappie over 12 inches plus as many small ones but only a couple of sand bass. We were using similar rods with red/chartreuse tube jigs but just a few feet difference in space made a big difference in catching. I tried other jigs and colors but that was the one they wanted when you got it in from of them.

It became so hot Saturday that we called it a day at 4:30. They were not biting under the bridge and the heat was unbearable at that dock.

I would be interested in doing some early morning fishing if you are interested. Give me a day's notice as I need to get some gas before my next trip in the boat.

Given that it is forecast to be 100+ degrees every day for the next week here, the change in weather is one of the nice features of the area. It gets cold there in the winter but not too cold. The lakes don't freeze over so I can still fish the year around. I have never fished sitting on top of ice and this dog is too old to learn new tricks. :Rofl

I know it rains in the summer but I can fish in rain as long as it is not a thunderstorm if the wind does not get too bad.

I'm actually looking forward to the fishing challenge, learning a new lake and relearning how to fish for wild rainbow trout and walleye. Been watching a lot of YouTube lately. :Rofl

I'm a moderate in outlook by nature, believe in the MYOB philosophy of life. I don't believe in the "my way or the highway" way of thinking that is current here in Texas. So Texas is becoming more of a culture shock as each year goes by and one group demands the rest of Texas and the world lives by that group's world view.

So as long as the natives of Seattle don't try to force their beliefs on me I don't care what they believe or how they live their life.

I was stationed there for the last three months of my first Army service, coming back from Korea. Wish I had settled there then but went back to Phoenix where my relatives lived. A year later the Army contacted me and made me an offer I couldn't turn down so I spent another six years serving in El Paso and S. Korea before I became injured and was forced to retire. I left El Paso for Dallas, then moved to Louisiana for 20 years. Now I am back in Dallas.

Seattle had the most beautiful scenery and best fishing of any state I have visited or lived in. Being born in Tennessee I love the mountains and forests, rivers and lakes. I learnt to love the ocean from my time in Korea and from living on the Gulf coast. So it offers the best of worlds to me, both in scenery and fishing. For all the years I lived in Phoenix and El Paso I never did learn to love or even appreciate the dessert. I guess my grandfather instilled the love of fishing too deep in me as a young child to ever appreciate the lack of water around me.

Yes, it rains but I don't mind light rain nor fishing in rain as long as it is not a downpour. I am actually looking forward to living and fishing there, I just don't care for the hassle and expense of moving. Plus I will miss my friends here.

From the YouTube videos I have been watching this past month they are a sought after game fish and are protected by size and harvest restrictions. I know from catching them years ago they are a very good fish for eating.

We would catch them, gut and clean them, salt, pepper and place some butter in the interior, then wrap them in foil. We would then grill them. They were delicious with that little amount of seasoning. In my opinion back then, they tasted better than crappie when crappie was cooked the same way.

I'm looking forward to catching them and wild rainbow trout, to see if they taste as good as I remember them tasting. I know I don't care for the taste of farm raised trout.

Hope you're right. Have a nephew that moved to Seattle for a job and found the current conditions were not to his liking. He is in in his mid 20's, and in Cyber Security for PayPal. When they offered to relocate him to Phoenix he jumped at it. His fiancée, now his wife, was from there. It made the relocating much easier on both, as she is a nurse and was fed up with the area also.

As I stated, I am a follower of the MYOB philosophy of life. Mind Your Own Business. They can believe in whatever they want, live however they want to live, as long as they don't try to force me to believe in what they believe in and live my life the way they want to live their lives.

Sadly that is happening more each year here, where one group thinks they have the right to force other Texans to follow their beliefs and way of living. I have two neighbors who no longer speak to me because I occasionally go fishing on Sunday mornings. One of them tried to lecture me about it and got quite upset when I told him MYOB. He asked what MYOB meant and got upset when I told him it means mind your own business. He will be happy to see the For Sale sign go on my house. I feel sad for him.

But this is beyond what I intended in this thread. I just want to learn about fishing conditions in the Seattle-Tacoma area and hopefully find a few new fishing buddies in the area. I know the country side is beautiful, with mountains, fresh-water lakes and the Puget Sound to fish in. Since I am a firm follower of MYOB, I will just ignore those whose ways I don't personally care for, just the way I currently do. I figure it is their loss, not mine, and will continue to live a very happy life without them. I just ask they don't try to force their beliefs on me by passing restrictive laws that enforce their beliefs on other people, which shouldn't be too much to ask.

I plan on keeping everybody posted on my new fishing adventures that relate to crappie fishing, learning new lakes, and if I'm lucky, new ways to fish for crappies. But it doesn't seem appropriate to talk about learning to fish for rainbow trout in a crappie forum so you will not see many, if any, of my actual fishing adventures with them. Nor will I bore people with the cultural aspects of life there.

I’ll only comment on one thing that you spoke of. That’s fishing on Sunday morning. Sorry that you lost a friend over it. If I say more I’ll get scolded. But I believe we share like minds on the subject.

I too was at Ft. Lewis in the late 1980's. I absolutely loved the area and it's "liquid sunshine". I went back there for work about 10 years ago and it's not like it used to be. Waaay too overcrowded and expensive. The only way I would want to live there now would be somewhere halfway between Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier in the middle of the woods away from everyone.

Now that I am retired, I fish seven days a week, whenever the mood hits me.

Sometimes it is in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon and sometimes at night. Since my now prime fishing buddy likes to fish in the afternoon that is what I have been doing the last four months. My other two prime fishing buddies deserted me to fish better producing lakes since i moved to Lake Worth.

I haven't done any night fishing for the last six months but given our weather is forecast at 100+ degrees night time is looking better and better again. I'm even thinking about early morning fishing, as much as I hate to get up before 7 in the morning. :Rofl

Being too crowded and too expensive can be said about anywhere there are jobs. I know DFW has become way overcrowded the last 15 years. And given my home increased in value over $100,000.00 during the last four years Arlington at least has become way too expensive. But I will grant you that homes in the better areas around Seattle are even more expensive than here.

My daughter is taking care of the house hunting so that is her headache. She trying to find one in a decent school district, without too much commute time for her husband to work and not too far away from the lakes where I plan on fishing. But I told her that since I was willing to drive up to one hour to get to the marina, he should be willing to drive up to one hour to get to work. Somehow they don't see the two as being equal in importance. :Rofl But I think she has settle on Bremerton, Port Orchard and Lacey as her target areas. All three are close enough to marinas to suit me. One nice thing about the area, they have a lot of different marinas, both freshwater and saltwater.

But I think I will be keeping my boat in a Lake Washington marina, and all three cities are close enough to be ok with me.

Any day I'm on the water in my boat I'm happy. Catching is just a bonus. :Rofl

It wasn't a friend, it was a neighbor. And it was his lost, not mine. All my friends fish on Sunday or any other day they get the chance to fish. Especially those who still have to work for a living. They joy of being retired. :Rofl

I've never realized that but I would not have looked had I realized it. I don't order fish at a steak house nor steak at a seafood restaurant so I would never look for advice on catching other fish on a forum dedicated to crappie fishing.

But since I will be fishing for rainbow trout and walleye as well as crappie I can post about those trips if anybody is interested. I suspect I will be fishing for all three species on the same day since they are found on the same lakes.

I am also considering seeing if my gopro still works and taking some videos of my crappie fishing there since I am finding so few videos of crappie fishing in the area on YouTube. Biggest thing that stops me is I'm lazy and the editing can be a real job.

I hope not to have adventures, as adventures can involved hardships (adventure: an unusual and exciting, typically hazardous, experience or activity). But I will post about my fishing trips, which always involve fun. :Rofl

The company I work for has a mill there. I have looked at retiring there and working my last 5-7 years there. It's some cooler than Alabama but I'm a fan of 50 degree weather. Two things that are plentiful in the area are "Seatles Best" coffee and 4:20

Even more important to me, there are lots and lots of places to fish for my favorite fish, with or without a boat.

I prefer weather that is between 70-80 degrees but 50 degrees is preferable to 100 degree days. :Rofl

i will take 100 over 50 , my old bones dont like it cold , but then again my young bones didnt either .....:Rofl
