What is the technique called for casting and retrieving w/o a float?
My brother and I prefer ultra light tackle and casting and slowly retrieving. I thought that would be called tight lining, but it seems with crappie this is not the case. I want to know the name of the technique so that a forum search can be used to learn more about it.
As far as I know that’s just casting and retrieving like you said. Not sure that has another technique name :dono
The term tightlining is often referred to letting the bait fall down to a certain depth and just holding it there. This can be in the middle of the water column or even on the very bottom. If you are simply casting your line out with Bait & Sinker then it could be something like a Carolina rig possibly. That's what is referred to in the bass world were you have the weight above the hook.

I call it fun. Certainly keeps a fella connected with the thump
pitch and reel maybe , I have 2 buds that love to do it and it will flat out ketch fish , one of them lives by his method of tossing a huge golf ball size crappie thunder in refrigerator white long distances and cranking it back slowly .

My dad always called it "Flappin' Up" when fishing big jigs for bass, because of the sound it makes when your jig and trailer hit right where the water meets the bank. It was his way of poking friendly fun at me because he thought I was crazy for risking getting snagged. I know that's no help but the question made me smile due to this. Hope you find what you need. I just call it casting versus pitching, jigging, trolling, pulling, etc.
Good question,certainly takes great angling skill to make the jig navigate in four directions and stay intensely in tune with any contact with the jig,is it grass,bottom,diving bird,over a branch underwater,has a crappie put it in its mouth and not otherwise disturbed its path. AlphaHawk and I seem to have kindred spirits. My brother and I like the challenge of “swimming the jig” aka, ”cast and retrieve”. Even though we know we can catch more with a float or jigging. I also fish barbless hooks. It’s the challenge that turns us on. LOL

Well I can not give to a name for it Other than “fishun”. :fish I use the same technique most of the time in Open areas. Lose lots of jigs to snags and in general have fun. A wise elbow here once called it “Horizontal Jigging”.
now, everyone knows I am not even close to being an expert in catching anything but it is a blast when they hit it that way. Plus other critters seem to like it at times also.

Cast & retrieve without a float or with a float. That's what I call good ole fishing. That's the way my dad & grandpa's taught me & that's the why I teach my kids.

I’ve also heard it called single poling or single pole. I do lots of that myself. Look in on the panfish forum and everything ultra light forum, lots of like minded folks there. Was just out this morning.
