What To Do.
Good news bad news. The bad news is that the shell cracker have not bedded in the area I am fishing. For the past 6 years they have been here thick…but so far no beds. Thought for sure I would find beds. It could not have happened yet…or the area I fish may not have bedding activity this year. Hard to keep driving the 83 miles and coming up short on what you’re looking for. Might be time to make my now once a year trip to Laurel Hill Lake. The good news…found 2 beds of bluegill…fighting them on a Fine Tail Banshee 6’ Super Ultra Light rod is a blast with the 2.3# test Ester line. All bluegill about 8 inches….not bad for Nickajack. Bison Trout Magnet getting it done today! Boated 100 of these before hitting I-24 for the long ride back home.

They hit the ultra lites like the biggest fish in the lake. Gotta love the fight in em and not a bad taste at the table.

Laurel Hill should be cranking up for the bluegill bedding, would be a good change of scenery. I will take 8in fish all day long on the UL gear.

My lake has not been good so far this spring . Fish made beds but would not hit anything on them . Strange year so far . You posted some nice ones though .

Nice fish !
Thanks for sharing!
Definitely a different year here as well!

It always seemed around here the shellcracker bed a month earlier than the bluegills .
Could be the weather this year messed them up .
If you’re finding bluegill are bedding in your area , you may have missed them this year .
I read bluegills will bed through summer if not caught and taken home .
just read shellcracker do the same here in the south . So they’re probably bedding together.
Congrats on the gills , I’d be thrilled with catching that many .
You may find it hard to believe, but I prefer to fish for them both when they’re not on the bed .
More challenging.

That’s a good day and worth the drive to my way of thinking. After my trip yesterday morning I’m ready to go again today, and I didn’t catch nearly as many as you did. Beautiful colors on those, very different from what I find here. Keep after em Randy, enjoy seeing your exploits.

Those were some really beautiful gills. As always, thanks for the ride along.

I'm going to Nicajack next week, haven't been there in over twenty years. Mullins Cove area to be exact.
