I’ve been going to my Office to see if the gills and crackers have made their appearance yet. While I’ve found a few they just haven’t been around like they have in past years. The floating weeds haven’t been sprayed like they have in the past either so some of my best areas are inaccessible. I’ve taken a couple of days off and decided to take another look today and enjoy the quiet for a while. Glad I did. Turned out some of my friends came back to see me.
Put in about 7:30 and found my first stop dry with a bobber hanging from a nearby tree. I’ve caught 15 good gills out of this one spot and hardly moved the boat. My guess is that they were hit up over the weekend. I did hook a good somebody that I never saw or got control of for the 15 seconds or so the rod was bent hard before the jig came back my way on the fly. Felt like a good LMB but I can’t say. I got two nice gills from one spot, both picture worthy.Attachment 427006

Picked up another off by himself not far from those.

Then I eased on past some of the floating weeds I spoke of, knowing there is bedding fish underneath but nothing I could do about it. Near the base of a cypress, this guy tried to steal my rod. That was right after a 7” redbreast came to the boat, came unhooked and did the el rollo over the gunnel and back into the pool. I only wanted a pic but he wasn’t interested.

I put him on the ruler, right at ten inches. My best this year and what a fight, he stayed deep and bulldoged me for quite a bit. Now I was wearing a big smile, been looking for those for a while. No more takers around here so I moved along and found these other folks that weren’t so camera shy.

Then this, and it took a couple of minutes for me to get him to see things my way.Attachment 427013

Around now the wind started to be a bother and I had to hide. But these folks were waiting for me so I wasn’t upset about it.

And not to be outdone by his cousin, this feller finished the day. He rather liked it under the boat and didn’t want to come out.

By now the wind was getting pretty stiff for my little gear and this fat boy was hungry so I headed home, scooped up my queen and went for a club sammich that was pretty darn good. I had been out just three hours. Hope y’all get out and find some that will make you smile like I am right now. One of those above is a double of a fish that’s on the ruler but the others are all one each except the one bass. As good as these gills are, I still can’t break the ten inch mark with my local fish. I’ll keep trying and until then, be careful and be healthy, and I hope to see you soon……..Skeet
