What are your options. What is it set on now?
Looks like 12. Is this a new tach or did it just start doing this?
It's been on there when I got the pontoon only used it like 3 times then got a TBI so been like 3 years since I used it so to be honest I can't yell you wat it was then. I'll get a pic of the back in the am
It's a teleflex tach
Attachment 423333
It was set on 2p I tried couple of settings but no joy.
None of the settings brings it down to where the rpms should be?
I would take it to the 6p setting and see what the reading looked like
I'll try that soon as the down pour here in sc decides to stop :bash
Since that is wanting to be set for pulses, 6 would be the correct setting. Another words the stator has 12 poles producing 6 pulses for the tach and rectifier. Try turning the adjustment screw back and forth many times stopping at 6. This often cleans corrosion of the very small contacts inside the tach. If this don't help check your charging circuit. If it is working correctly then the tach is probably bad.
I'll know if the tach is working right or not the merc vessel view mobile just came in so I'll able to use your advice and then checking it against that . Appreciate yall..
I have vessel view myself. I like it alot
I checked my boat tach with a cool, cheap tach I bought off fleabay a while back. It's about the size of your finger, holds one AAA battery, has a small digital display, and has a single black lead a little over a foot long out of one end. You push a button to power it up, set it for how many cylinders the engine has, and select two stroke or 4 stroke. The black wire requires at least 3 wraps around the #1 spark plug wire. It works! I believe it was less than $10.00.
After checking my boat tach, I checked my mowers, generator, chain saw, and anything I could think of. Great for carb adjustments and idle speeds. Even worked on my Husqvarna Weed Eater at 12,000 RPM! My riding mower now runs right at the factory spec of 550 @ idle, and 1,550 @ WOT.
A very cool little tool, indeed.
Link?
Thanks

Does sound like a useful little tool
I'll have to check it out
Sorry, the one I bought is listed as "Not Available", but here are some I found on Amazon that are similar.

Another option, if you wish to be impressed, you can get yourself a "Treysit Sirometer", old German technology, it uses no power but will show you the rpm's of just about anything.
It converts oscillations into rpm's, and is still made by the German family of the man that invented it. Currently distributed by Briggs and Stratton. Just lay in on or around the running "Object", and it will tell you the rpms. Comes in a handy little case, I gave about $25 for mine. Impresses everyone who sees it. It is also very accurate!
As the video shows, you adjust the wire out until the wire reaches it widest "Swath", and it will show you the RPMs!
