So Sunday was my first day long trip on the water. Hit the ramp by 8 and fished until 3:30. Very chilly at first and the bite was decent. Caught 30-40 short fish and 6 keepers. Not exactly a slam dunk but for the first trip all my gear was intact and no surprises. I’ll take it. I returned on Monday after work and from 4:30 til 7 I caught just as many fish and maybe 10 real pigs.
I happened to find about 75 yards of treetops isolated by themselves in the mouth of a known spawning area and man it was fun. As soon as I eased up into the cover I knew I was going to get bit, it was literally one after the other, even had all of my rods doubled over at once and I was hoisted fish with each hand and the dogs were going ape on me. I released all of the fish, something I’m going to do more of and maybe it will catch on. I’m as guilty as anyone about keeping more fish than I can eat, and just because I’m under the limit doesn’t mean I HAVE to keep them. Do I think that my own actions have any effect on the lakes fishing quality, no… but take 150 guys like me every weekend taking every fish and tossing them in the box, we might be catching a lot more short ones than we are used to. No soap box to preach on, just protecting my resource from myself. The rain and weather is going to slow them up again but make no mistake the water temp is 56 and conditions are getting more right by the day. Y’all be careful and have fun I’ll be seeing some of you on the water soon enough.
