Chasing Gill at our Town pond
Beginning today , I’m going post my results from my little short trips to our town pond on this post .
I’ll just add to this each time I go .
I’ll post pictures of what I catch and what I caught them on .
It’ll be a continuous post , rather than making a new one every time I go .
Today , I got to the pond around 4:15 and fished until just before 6:00 .
The weather was sunny and beautiful and the park was full of folks , doing what folks do at a town park .
I’m thinking with this warmer weather , I’m going to have to start getting up and going earlier than I have been and fish the morning when they’re less folks there .
With the crowd, the fishing loses part of its purpose, for me anyways .
My fishing combo today was my older model 5’4” St. Croix Panfish series paired with my newest Daiwa Legalis 1000LT , spooled with 2# P-Line , green mist .
I fished the drop shot with a size 10 candy corn spider over a 1/16 weight .
I was able to get three to hand and had two that felt great until the hook pulled loose . :( . I’m thinking from the way they were running and pulling drag , they must have been shellcrackers .

03-22-22 Replacement rod proper sliming :)
The forecast called for sunny but windy , 15-20mph and gusty , with a big front headed our way .
Prayers go out to those states who experienced this front during the daylight hours where it was the most dangerous.
Hopefully when it gets to us tonight and early tomorrow morning, our area will be more stabilized. But they are predicting winds up to 60mph .
Today I received both my 5’4” St. Croix Ultralight rods , one Panfish series, and a Trout series.
I picked the Panfish series today to face the wind .
Paired with a Shimano Nasci 500 reel, spooled with 4# P-line Original . A variegated green chartreuse spider tied to a loop about 16” above a 1/16 drop shot weight .
The wind didn’t disappoint.
I hide behind the bridge at the town pond trying to block off as much wind as I could .
Using this rod today , I remember why I loved them so much . To me , it’s the perfect UL spinning rod and the most sensitive rod I’ve owned .
I’m glad the insurance covered their damage and glad I replaced them .
The shellcracker have been dominate as of late and this evening I caught three decent size ones that put up a heck of a fight on this little rod .
My only disappointment today was my Shimano Nasci reel . With the largest cracker it almost froze up when trying to wind it with a load on it .
It was replaced with a Daiwa Legalis lt1000 when I got home .
Three fish , in a little over an hours fishing , in the wind , I call it a fun trip challenging trip .

3-25-22 windy day fishing
Despite of the threat of high winds , the sun came out from behind the clouds around five today and I told my wife , I’d see her in a little while.
When I first got there the wind was blowing, but didn’t seem that bad around the bridge .
I had rigged up a double spider rig with an adjustable small weighted float .
I fish the jig and float on both sides of the bridge without any takers .
I had a little trouble casting , as it seemed the wind would gust just about the time I cut loose with a cast and there was no telling where it would land .
I switched over to a single spider drop shot rig and walked to the other side of the pond where it turned out , the wind was worse .
But it didn’t stop me from catching a small gill and a little redear .
With about twenty minutes left , I went back to the back side of the bridge where if I kept my casts low , I could cast ok , most of the time . One of my cast got a little high and wind blew it completely over the bridge .
I was able to catch my two bigger fish in that spot , a medium size colorful redear and a colorful nice bluegill .
Combo was my 5’4” SC Panfish paired with a Daiwa Legalis LT 1000 , spooled with 4# P-line .
I’m glad I went . The wind is supposed to be worse tomorrow, but if it’s sunny, I still might give it a try .

3-31-22 Fishing with a Poor man’s CDM rod
If there is such a thing.
I bought this rod off Amazon . It’s shipped from China and takes about 5-6 weeks to arrive.
It’s a Rosewood 5’ two piece UL spinning rod. They offer a 5’6” and a 6’ . They start at $29.99 and go up in price as the length go up .
It looks like a well made rod and I enjoyed fishing with it today for the forty-five minutes I was able to fish .
It was another windy day , and Thursday must be a popular day at the pond . It was loaded with walkers and had four other people fishing.
I rigged up a spider fly on drop shot and the little rod cast great . It would really fling that drop shot rig .
Ended up only catching two gills , but had on a bass about 12” that was pulling drag like crazy until it jumped and tossed the hook . Fun on the little rod .
I had it paired up with a Daiwa Revros LT 1000 S , spooled with two pound P-line .
Hooked two turtles , got my rig back on the first one , hooked in the front leg , the other one was hook under a leg and I broke off trying to get to it . The turtles swim around the bridge waiting for kids to feed them and they run into my line . :( .
I like the rod . I also have it in a casting version for BFS fishing , but haven’t had a chance to try it out yet .
These will probably become my behind the seat rods , since they’re two piece and break down to a compact length .
