Study: Live Sonar Helps Catch More (But Not Bigger) Crappies | Outdoor Life

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Gonna pass this one on to my buddy to read as well.
Interesting survey
It was an interesting article. Gonna have to study on it some to have a opinion
Interesting read for sure.
Sent from my iPhone using Crappie.com
I went back and read this, fantastic. I feel 1 hook in the water per angler is better than 36 hooks in the water with shiners on each (seems more swallowed hooks to me with shiners).
Thank you so much for posting!
Thanks for posting. Good info.
if used right and you understand what you see down there ,live sonar will in fact help you ketch larger crappie , this is fact
Interesting and some curious stats in the article.
Live sonar users caught over twice as many fish per hour than non live sonar users, but kept 30% less fish than non users.
Out of 700 boats only 2% had caught their limit.
I wonder if some of the other 98% had caught a limit, but only kept a few fish.
Not sure how extensive the survey was.
Thanks for posting the link
I will reply how I did the last time I saw this study:
Eventhough I don't believe it is the end of crappie fishing as we know it, this study is about as good as a CNN news report. Too many variables and unknowns.
I didn't see a link to the actual study, but I'm not sure you can draw any meaningful conclusions at all from this.
First of all, it's based on self reported survey results (notoriously inaccurate) submitted by fishermen (notorious liars!). Secondly, the self selection bias here is extreme. Live sonar costs thousands of dollars. Anyone with it is far more likely to be a dedicated, skilled fisherman.
I'm willing to bet that the live sonar group would catch far more than the other group, even if you made them all use traditional sonar.
first thing that crossed my mind was this .....we met a fella we see all the time just glued to his livescope the other day at a lake without a clue of a bite on that lake lately.
we have seen him countless times during sling festivals , he is just looking at the screen while we sling them .
reported to us he ketched over 500 just last week ,with lots being over 2 lbs .......
being that lake is about one of my mostest favorite spots ever for crappie
and knowing it is a dead sea in the winter EVERY year ....
if he was in the reporting crowd in a survey , it would likely be not so factual ......just saying :Rofl
