March 1st is only a few days away. Time to trudge down to Walmart and get your new license.
On that note, has anyone had their license checked while out fishing here in the great Commonwealth of Kentucky?
I had my kreel checked once, but never just my license.
I have not, in fact never seen a warden.
I’ve only had mine check twice, and both times it was the same officer, while I was wade fishing the same creek. It’s a small creek behind an abandoned mall in the county. Not many people fish it. I find it funny that’s where I have been both times I’ve been checked lol

Can't remember the last time I was checked for a license when fishing in Ky. Been checked regularly for hunting license when Dove hunting, though.
In fact, I've not seen a CO on the lakes I fish, or a Creel Check Officer, in the past decade or two.
Not only do we need to be reminded to get our licenses, but also check the new regs on fire extinguishers.
Been checked 2 maybe 3 times in my life in KY, I have been checked more in FL.
Yes on Cedar ever year some times twice if its a new guy.
A funny story about being checked. I spent a great deal of time in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, serving in the Army at Fort Devens. In the dead of winter a fishing buddy invited me to go ice fishing. I dressed as warmly as I could and off we went. Drilled our holes, put in the tip-ups and waited. While we were waiting we see a fellow get out of a pickup, grab his gear and set out walking towards us. I said to George, my fishing buddy, "That's a game warden." He asked how I knew. I told him that he was carrying a Styrofoam minnow bucket in one hand and he was swinging it. No one swings a full minnow bucket. Sure enough, he walks up to us, takes his other hand out of his coat pocket holding his badge in a leather holder. Introduces himself, and asks to see our licenses. We showed him our licenses, and he wished us a good day, and started walking towards a group of other fishermen farther down the lake.
I've been checked several times over the years.
Last year we were having a good day trolling cranks and we see the CO come up in a bay boat. He asked permission to tie up to my boat. We already had our license out, he looked around the boat but I already had all my required safety gear out where he could see it. I asked if he needed to see my guide license and Coast Guard credentials and he said "I know who you are and you wouldn't be out here if you weren't legal."
My clients then proceeded to take 20+ minutes of the CO's time and their fishing time to ask questions and just BS with the CO. BTW, the only fish he asked to see was a 15" largemouth. It was touching the line but he said "Doug, this one is pretty close!" I asked if his board measured 15" and he said it did. He then thanked us for keeping some largemouth bass and said the Dept was encouraging other fishermen to do so also.
BTW, it is very simple to buy your license on line then have it sent to your phone. I don't know if it is a good thing or bad thing but my wife and I get to buy Senior Licenses for the first time.
Not been check in a couple of years now. A few years ago I was checked 5 trips in round at green. FYI that means 5 times in 2 weeks. tslabseeker was with me 1 of those times and the warden told Tim where my life jackets were. :dono The year before that I was checked 5 or 6 times at Cumberland in 2 weeks and that same summer I was checked twice at midnight on cumberland. I know they got a job to do but you would think they would have stopped checking me like that....
License checked, along with safety gear, one time on Cumberland several years ago. Also had a creel check 2 years ago. Planning to go later this week, thanks for the reminder.
Great reminder. It’s very easy to get caught up in life and forget to renew.
I have been checked 3 times in my life. They were always professional. I was following all the rules so they went their own way.
What’s the deal with Fire extinguishers? I haven’t seen anything about that yet.

Boats less than 26 feet and 2018 model year or newer must carry unexpired “5-B” “10-B” or “20-B” fire extinguishers. Having older “B-I” and “B-II” types do not meet the new carriage requirements.

Creel guy below Cordell Hull last summer. I was catching skipjack. He asked me how many I had caught. I told him I didn't know but it was way less than 100.

Used to get my creel checked at Taylorsville, now & then (a long time ago), but never anywhere else. Only time I've even seen a CO at Cedar Creek was back shortly after it opened for fishing. He didn't check me, as he was too busy checking the sticker on a guys runabout that he was about ready to launch. It was expired or he didn't have the boat number decals on the boat, or something along those lines, and he was told to take the boat back home. I've seen CO's on Cumberland, but most of the time they were chasing around looking for alcohol drinkers on the big boats. Got checked once at Cave Run, and right after he got done with me and started to pull away a guy on a Ski-doo was doing donuts around the no wake buoy (after Sundown). He pulled him over and was writing him up as I idled on down the bank & started fishing. Funny part of that was we both just shook our heads at the same time when the guy started doing the "donuts", not 50ft from where we were. :Doh: :RoflQuote:

On another occasion, I was checked on Kentucky Lake a few years ago on Memorial Day weekend. I had a friend with me and we were fishing for bluegill in my boat. I looked up to see a boat approaching and mentioned to my friend, "Here comes two Game Wardens. I'm sure they are checking fishing licenses." When the officers pulled alongside my boat, I showed them my license, but my friend said, "I left mine in my wallet in the truck over there at the boat ramp." One of the officers politely said, "Go get it. WE'll wait." I thought that was very nice of him. So we motored over to the ramp, and my friend retrieved his license from the truck, only to find that his license was out of date. We went back out to where the officers were busily checking other boats. My friend explained his situation, and the officer who had been so polite said, "Wow! I can't believe you came back out here." But...he still wrote him a ticket for $65. However, before they left, he said to my friend, "We are going on down the lake and won't be back into this bay today. So if you want to go ahead and fish today, you may." As they boated away, I said, "Well, it's about 5 pm. You just want to call it a day." And my friend replied, "H--l NO! We are gonna fish till dark! This trip cost me $65!!!"
Got checked this afternoon when I returned back to the ramp. I was on Cumberland in Fishing Creek. He checked license, fish and safety equipment (PFD's, fire extinguisher, horn & throwable cushion).
