Anyone here also use spincast gear? I have spinning and baitcasters but sometimes I enjoy the simplicity of a spincast setup. I’ve got a Zebco micro 33 and a Pflueger trigger spin.

I have some trigger spins set up for the wife to use. I grab one up every once in a while. Nothing better when a fella is targeting bream in my opinion
I have a couple of Zebco Omega Pro Z2’s for when I get frustrated with my BFS baitcasters . But at 9.5oz , they’re a little heavy , but are a smooth reel .
Wife hooked a bridge piling one night. Set the hook hard, rod bent, drag on the little reel screaming as she cranked that handle at a heart pumping pace. The men on the other end of the bridge were off their respective rocks , on their feet cheering her on. I walked behind her and told her she was hooked on the bridge. She put some slack in the line, the glow float popped up to the surface and floated free. You could hear the air leave those two fellas as they said awe it broke off. The legend still persist of that auburn haired woman that lost a world record crappie late one cold night at that North Alabama creek of mud. :Rofl
That is a good story, DSJ!

She put on a show. She also caught her first crappie that night. A very solid 14" fish that was thick
Mrs. Gunwhatgun uses spincast stuff. We both use it when we are catfishing at the campground. I just finished her a custom ultralight casting rod with a Daiwa minincast reel. It is Sweet! I am also a big fan of trigger spin rigs to. They are great to have when extra fishermen show up, or teaching little ones the basics and getting them ready for a spinning rig.
Being a dock shooter I am a little ashamed that I have not at least given a trigger spin a try. As I have been told they work very well shooting docks.
They are perfect for it, but you may struggle a bit. I learned using a spinning reel and that is the muscle memory I have, if I switch to a trigger spin my timing is off. I need a few tries to get my rhythm going.
Now, if I have someone in the boat that has never done it, they get a trigger spin rig and most have it down quick.

I was wondering what rod you use with your Zebco Omega Pro Z2’s.I like to use
my Z2 for cold weather fishing when I have to wear gloves. Thanks for any info.
It’s a combo that I bought. Just lists it as a Zebco 33 rod. It’s ultralight.
I don’t use em and taught the grandkids with spinning. Sorry I’m no help. I do want to share a story similar to Jacks. Camryn wasn’t 10 and we were fishing near a bridge with rip rap but off of the rocks. 1/32 with a panfish assassin body so you know the size and a 5’ four pound test setup and she says fish. The drag starts screaming, then she starts screaming, then the 10 folks on a dock 30’ away start cheering. She has no control at all, then I see why. She’s hooked into about 5 lbs of LMB who is now running back and forth through a good sized branch so I knew the eventual outcome. He ran back and forth about 4 times before the line was too tangled and audibly snapped. She was crushed and the spectators began clapping. All total less than ten seconds. She talks about this still almost ten years later. Love moments like those, I can still see it all in my mind. Thanks for letting me go off track.
I have several ultralight casting rods I swap back and forth with BFS and baitcasting reels loaded with six pound line .
A couple are custom rods built on ultralight spinning blanks . One is a five footer I just got off Amazon for around $30 . It seems to be a nice rod , took about three or four weeks from China . I have a couple of Daiwa fiberglass UL rods I use too .
I began my fishing with a Zebco 33 . I used these spooled with six pound line for bass fishing , but have always had some kind of UL spinning outfit .
I used the 33’s for several years . We’d trick them out , slicking up the drags on them .
I have an Omega on a 6 ft old Gander Mountain crappie rod. It actually casts quite well and drag ain't bad
I break out the Zebco 33 now and again if for no other reason than nostalgia. And it's so easy to use too. Was messing with a Zebco trigger/under spin the other day. Going to give it to a neighbor kid.
Grew up with a Zebco 33 & didn't learn spinners till much later. Truth be told, I only bought a couple nice spinning rigs (just got back into fishing earlier this year after a 35+ year hiatus) because I kinda felt like a spincaster wasn't "serious" enough. I like the underspins a bunch & woulda gotten a Gold version underspin if they made it in a size 30.
I did however, buy myself a Zebco Omega Z02 combo for pond use & love it, but wish I could find a good Light power casting rod for it. The 5'6 ML "Omega Graphite" is nice, but struggles to cast < 1/16oz well with 6lb mono. Wife only knows spincasters with no interest in learning anything else, so I got her a 33 Micro combo that she likes a bunch. Would like to get her something a little bigger for lake use though & save the little UL rig for our pond. Similarly, I'd like to leave my little Omega at the pond & get the Z03 size, strung with 8-10lb mono for lake use, specifically for live bait & trolling.
Whatever happened to pistol grip casting rods- nobody like 'em anymore? 'N why almost no Light power casting rods?
Hey Carl check out a Bass Pro MIL60MLT.Its there Microlite 6’ one piece med lite straight handle rod.Omega Z02 with 4lb mono works good for me on that rod.Casts very good for distance with 1/16 ounce jig and 2 1/2 weighted bobber.Straight handle works good for two handed casting.I think I paid $60 bucks for mine.
CC, in my opinion : pistol grip casting rods are plentiful, if you're a Bass angler or you're willing to pay for Japanese rods. And as any Bass angler will tell you, a "lite" powered rod is a disaster waiting to happen. There's not much of a market for pistol grip casting rods in Lite Power (in my opinion) because of the spinning rods/reels popularity & functionality.
Even Berkley's Cherrywood casting rods only go down to Med/Lite, from what I'm seeing.
BUT .... you have to know that there's not really any "industry standard", so one brand's "action" designation may be totally different in other brands.
How is a L rod a potential problem, running 4 or 6lb mono? On the off chance we hooked a lunker (or a log), shouldn't the line break before the rod could be damaged? Not being argumentative or assuming anything- I'm just new to all this & trying to understand.
We're just out having fun & chasing groceries, so the odds of us bumbling into a monster fish are pretty slim. I don't target big cats, I care not a whit about trophy LM bass & in my little 15' boat, I'm not gonna be out on the main lake to hook into a big ol' wiper on the topwater bite. If we ever get set up for trolling, or find ourselves chasing walleye regularly, I'd obviously set us up with the appropriate gear for the task.
It ain’t a problem. I’ve lost count of the number of 20-25 pound drum I’ve caught on UL and L rated rods. Not to mention probably a couple of thousand 4-6 pound Smallies on UL rods. Stay within the line rating on the rod and I’m sure you’ll be fine. Not sure as has been said you will find pistol grip casting rods in an L rating in the US market. And has also been said if you want to spend the money Japan has plenty of them….even in UL if you so desire.

Back in the 70s I learned to fish with a spin cast, caught alot of catfish, bass and trout. Can't remember my first spin cast reel but I do remember riding my bicycle to town and buying a new reel - a red Abumatic 160 or 170 spin cast. That was a great reel! I later moved up to a Mitchell 308 and a larger Daiwa spinning reel which was the start of my spinning gear.
Early 70s picture with my red Abumatic spincast, the other kid was using a Mitchell 300. A few other childhood catches using spin cast gear.

About 14yrs ago I purchased a Zebco spin cast for my son but was not impressed with it at all. The face cover was difficult to align and remove/install. So I bought a Daiwa Goldcast and the drag was lackluster, could not tighten it down enough. Returned both of them and taught my son to use a spinning reel.
