Why are jigs pulled rather than being pushed? Im sure there's a simple reason. But I cant come up with it

Keeps them out of the trolling motor.. atlaest for me it does.

I thought you could do both???
In my case it is because my boat has a transom mount trolling motor.
My other boat has a bow mount tm and I deadstick with it instead of push.

I also use a special tm mount to allow me to do actual side pulling. All rods out the port side. I drift and do steering corrections with the tm.

But why do you guys pull?

Side pulling we use jigs. Transom pulling will be jigs or cranks. Both types of pulling is due to tm location.

Another factor I guess would be that when pulling our longest pole is 9 ft due to small boat size

Thanks.
I have recently changed my direction in my boat purchasing and bought a pan fish. My Balance ain't real good anymore. I very rarely troll but some of my friends love it. So now I gotta learn to side pull. I was just worried about fishing in water I just pulled a boat across sideways lol.

No worries. That only seems to matter in real shallow water. [emoji846]

Side pulling you can use shorter rods and still keep your baits spread. Most side pulling boats are set-up to fish 3 people efficiently. Just my take on the matter.
I don't have to worry too much about spread here in Illinois. We can only have 2 poles each and this boat is just a 2 person jon.

What in the world am going to do with all these 16 footers I've been buying up for years.

You can still use them if you have a 16 ft net [emoji1]

your 16 ft poles will work fine for pushing jigs and as an outside rod if pulling from each side of the boat like i do. my long lining set up is 2 16s, 2 11s, and 2 7s. 1 one each side. find the right depth with amount of line out and speed. landing fish with is not a big deal but does take a little practice, just bring the fish to the net.
Either that or teach my wife's spaniel to retrieve them.

Never understood why side pulling would be different than regular long linning out the back or sides or how you cover different water than you would when pulling ! I have pushed and pulled at the same time covered close to 40’ each pass .
It's gotta be similar for sure. And when I'm alone I'll be dock shooting large part of the time. But for my purposes side pulling is definitely safer than trolling. When I'm trolling in my boat I find myself hopping on and off the bow deck. This next boat don't have platforms period. Nothing makes me happier than getting a friend or two together and trolling and catching some good fish. Keepers or not.

For me it is a few things that attract me. All your poles are relatively close by and in easy reach. It is a more comfortable seating and pole arrangement. It seems to me that I notice hooked fish sooner due to being able to monitor all the poles in a single straight away view. That's just me. You may feel differently.
Book a trip with Joel Harris on Pickwick . Can learn a lot in a day ! :twocents
You friends with a pro?

I’m not sure he’s considered a Pro since he doesn’t fish tournaments [emoji38]. Brad is a good guy and can definitely fill the livewell with his side pulling technique and has a very nice War Eagle (which I really like the color of his new one) setup perfect for what he does. I definitely could see a rig like his in my future when I get a little older.
