PB Black Crappie
I started the day tying more little duck feather jigs, chubs and shad darts and made plans with headhunter to fish a little park lake that afternoon. I live closer so I got an early start and tied on one of my new creations. Caught several small fish and then it happened. Cork went under and I set the hook. Fish took off strong pulling drag and my first thought was that it's a bass. Using 2lb. Maxima I worked it in slowly and OMG, it's a big crappie. Tiny jig did it's job and I lipped it. I had to show it to headhunter who wasn't there yet so I put it on a stringer until he arrived a couple minutes later. No tape measure or scale, it stretched from the tip of my middle finger all the way onto my bicep, probably 17.5-18 " in length and thick too. Took a quick picture and put it back so hopefully she will make a bunch of babies this spring. Jig I used in the pic. Attachment 415359Attachment 415360Attachment 415361

Nice one Jim. I caught a pretty good one myself yesterday while using a buddys livescope.

Thanks everyone, it was quite an unexpected thrill. Hopefully I will see her again one day. About a year ago this lake suffered a massive fish kill when they turned the water cannon that fills the lake on full blast for a couple weeks. This is tap water and when I walked the lake I saw dead fish everywhere including carp so I figured the fish population was totally wiped out. They did some fingerling stocking and a few weeks ago I fished it for the first time and caught slabs on my first three casts. This lake used to have mostly white crappie with only an occasional black but so far I've caught only one white and over 100 black so I think Black crappie are more tolerant of tap water.

That’s a great fish Jim!! And an equally good looking jig. Simple works for me more often than not. Glad the fish kill wasn’t complete and you still have a place to catch nice fish.

I had just got there and was walking up to lake when I saw him take this out of water and walked over to him. thought it was a bass but dang it was a monster. Thick shouldered and heavy one heck of a fish! I took the pics quickly and dang it if I had a new scale back in my car but it was a long way off as I hadn't been here before. JJJ makes some great jigs, he gave me some this spring and they were so pretty didn't use them till recently. we both fished them for rest of afternoon and caught quite a few dinks, bass and BG's.
BTW agree on length as i put it up on my coat and when home thought it went between 17.5 and 18. Heck of a fish. going to use his jigs on lakes where MDC stocked trout but have big crappie in them as well and see what happens.
