Made up a few jigs today

Gorgeous weather down here in the heart of horse country here in Florida. Just beautiful.

I was riding in my buddy’s boat today. He wanted to show me a new lake and it was very nice. My head was on a swivel the whole time. He sits up front with six rods, me in the back with six. All his gear and lures.

He started catching some very nice fish, then things kind of switched off. I had two smalls at that point. So we rode around and talked. Then I got the nicest fish of the day.

He estimated it at just under two pounds. All I know was it was chunky. I mean fat. Very dark colors and he hit a color combo that has become one of my go to combos.

We threw him back and several other keepers, and then it was the attack of the little fish. Hungry devils.

Anyways I made up some new jigs when I got home.

Not sure you can notice any sort of color pattern, but maybe you can. I made sizes- 1/32 - 1/16 - 1/8 - 1/2 with whirling blades. The heavy jigs will be my close quarters combat lures for big fish. The others will be long lined out the back. Some of the 1/32nd sized jigs have small plastics, and the 1/16th a little larger, and 1/8th larger still.

I have issues determining depths and such and don’t know how much line I have out. Not sure what happens at various speeds. However I do know heavier stuff sinks deeper so a selection will assist me. I can guess shallow, mid or deep and probably get by with it. If they like one size better than the others, I will switch everything over. Today the fish wanted deep early and shallow later.

Going to take my boat out and see if the engine is still having issues. Small lake that I can simply use trolling motor to navigate and fish. The weather should be gorgeous all over again.

Oh and I made some other jigs. They are 1/2 ounce and have whirly dervish thingies affixed to their undersides. Unsure of what I will eventually end up doing with them- plastic baits or hand ties. I know what colors I want though and that is a huge help. Take a look and maybe you will have some ideas for me.

The head color and the eyes look very much like a reptile or amphibians. A body with a dark green back and a yellow belly could make for some interesting catches.

Along the same lines of RJR, green pumpkin back, flourescent orange belly.

Looks like you have that crackling effect down like junglejimjigs does. very wicked with those funky spin blades. let us know how effective they are! congrats for figuring out this crappie fishing thingy.

Boat still running rough. I only trolled today so that meant limited efforts. Started later because the fish do not seem to be biting “first thing” like during other seasons. Like they need to warm up before they will chase my junk. Usually I hook them when they yawn.

Five fish today but some pretty nice fatties in the mix.

The large one is 14” and one pound six ounces. Enough fish to fix she who must be obeyed a fine dinner. Gonna do up a pasta/salad deal with blackened fish atop. She eats weird so……

You will never guess what that fat fish took. Yup ! Crinkle headed fiddler crab thingie with one of Bob’s Jigs’ brand new trident plastic baits. Dipped right off the back of the boat probably ten feet back and about four feet deep. When they hit in close, the fight is so much more dramatic. They are still plenty green and splashing and carrying on. His mouth looked the size of a coffee cup even if later actually appears to be golf ball sized. LOL. I am so sold on heavy jigs fished in close now.

I saw some stuff today that was kind of cool. Check out the white pelicans. Larger birds.

They were swimming in tight formation alongside the weed line. Suddenly they would charge into the weeds and a melee would occur. A real ballyhoo I tell you. Splashing and flapping and fish gobbling and everyone in close to one another. I felt they were corralling shad schools, scaring them into the weed line, then bum rushing them. Watched the cormorant birds staying out in front of them, as if they were scoring fish due to the pelicans pushing the schools. It was very entertaining I assure you due to the slow nature of today’s fish catching action.

I was very tolerant of the kayaker at the ramp, too. Yes I was. Good boy. I just smiled and pretended that none of it mattered. He remained oblivious. :)
