A Good Lifevest

All,
I have some christmas money to spend and I believe its high time I invest in a quality lifevest. I want to purchase an A/M inflatable unit. I am usually on the water 100+ days a year in conditions of all types and temperatures. Any recommendations ? Happy New Year and God Bless.

I have 2 different versions of those. I like the more deluxe version better. That being said I am sure there are better brands of inflatables out there

If there’s no budget, then purchase the best one that works on hydrostatic pressure. The less expensive models deploy with contact with water and that includes rain so keep a rearming kit on hand if you decide to go the less $ route.

I have the Mustang survival and really like it, one reason is it has it`s own built in gauge if the CO2 container needs to be replaced, so not spending money needlessly. It is very comfortable when I first put it on I notice it being there but about 15 minutes or so I don`t notice it. It`s so comfortable when stopping on Lake restaurants ( bars ) I forget to take it off.

I second the Mustang MIT series A/M PFD. These have been tested and being they are frontside buoyant they do roll over the person onto their back face up with neck support if they fall in the water face down and unconscious. Some vests do not roll a person onto their back if they fall in face first. I have personal experience with this vest, not in a life threatening way. I wear it all the time when fishing, under big motor power, or generally any time I am on the water. I have even worn it on over water construction that I was project managing on. The Mustang MIT A/M has a robust inflation system and seems to be better in the rain. I have been in very strong wind blown 1 inch or better an hour rain on a construction project and it did not accidently inflate. However, I would make attempts to keep it dry when storing it. I do not work for Mustang nor receive any endorsements from them. I have given these vests to my father-in-law (who has fallen out of the boat conscious), my uncle, and my wife. They are comfortable and worth every penny. Bass Pro and Cabelas have them on the rack for you to try on. This is just my opinion and thanks for reading it. Stay safe on the water.

The only PFD that will turn you over if unconscious is a Type 1….which none of the Mustang inflatables are…..no inflatables are Type 1. I have used Mustang for years but folks shouldn’t think it will roll you over if your face down.

I just purchased the BPS a/m 33. I thought I owed it to my family to invest in a nice comfortable pfd. It makes them happy and it’s comfortable so I don’t mind wearing it at all.

Several on my boat. BPS brand, mustang, onyx and a couple that look like a Fanny pack you wear around your waist. I always wear one. Fell in a few years back in February when I commercial fished. No vest. Only went in to my neck.
Boat ramp only about 3 minutes from the house. Tied the boat off and came to the house pulling just the trailer and knocked at the front door. Never forget the wife’s face as she shook her head. Threw the wet clothes in the tub and put dry one on.
Butt cheeks stayed cold all day while running my nets. Lol
I do wear one now while on the water and hope everyone does.

Thanks for all the information. I have taken the time to try a number of these units on with my normal Fishing apparel. I decided on the one that was most comfortable as I believe that will lead me to wearing it consistantly. That being said, I chose the ONYX A/M 24. I am 6'5" 265lbs and that unit by far fit me the best. If performance dwindles I will be sure to share it here. Happy New Year to you all and God Bless. I'll be tying rigs till the water gets soft.

Glad to hear you found a comfortable vest! That will help ensure you will use it! A lot of lives needlessly lost by those that don’t put it on!

Up here the best thing is wear one all the time. Since I fish all winter out of the boat on the Mississippi Pool 4 stays open all year,. If you happen to go overboard you only have a few minutes to survive in 34 degree water. Any type of life vest will at least let your loved ones have something to bury, and save searchers a lot of time.
