How many of you use float and fly techniques

I am just curious as to how many of you have tried a modified float and double fly rig? I am going to use the fly I tied on my You Tube TV channel. You can see this video in the jig tying forum.Attachment 415047 and some of the soft plastic I have been making in this double rig. I tie the top lure on the line with a Palomar knot and the bottom jig with a loop knot. Set the depth of the float with the bobber stop. It gives the fish two choices at two different depths.

If you have used a hair jig and a soft plastic jig in combination under a float how did it go? Just curious.

Been giving it some thought lately . Have acquired everything I think I need . (Actually I already had everything, just had to search through a few tackle bags to find it all )
But my first thought is to use a 1” Gulp minnow as my plastic bait .
Plan on trying it out Monday , hopefully.
I’ve also thought of doing a double drop shot rig with the same combo .

On that top hook I use a Surgeon's loop, so the bait sticks out from the Leader. And a plain hook with live bait or plastic.This way the bait will swing and sway in an enticing way.Also it's easier for the fish to get the bait all the way into its mouth without having the leader blocking it.

I have used it with jigs made from craft hair but nothing else.

I’ll be interested in seeing some of the comments, Mike. I tried some double rigs back in my heavy fly fishing days, but never had much luck. Sounds like it would be worth a try.

i have a buddy that uses a float and fly (not a jig) rig almost exclusively with a fly rod .
he likely ketches more fish than all of us put together and that aint no joke .
he targets everything and ketches everything with this set up .

You mean he uses a top water popping bug as a float with a dropper fly attached ?

If it isn't a trade secret can you share his preferred float and fly selection?

My preferred float for fishing a fly with a spinning rod is an "Adjust a Bubble". Put your line through it and tie on the lightweight fly with no weight. Pull the ends of the adjust a bubble to add water to it for weight and then twist the ends so the internal rubber band crimps and holds the bobber in place at the desired depth.
The partially water filled bobber gives you the weight to cast far and the amount of water also adjusts the sensitivity so fish can easily pull it under without any resistance.

Absolutely deadly on crappie, gills and anything else that eats flies.

I've fished a float and fly for years with marked success. An adjustable slip float, clear plastic and a long leader to the fly. Cast it a mile and then reel back slowly.

I have tried still fishing it with very little success but I'm not fishing for crappie. I have had my best results with a jig on the bottom and a fly about 2 feet above it on a line from a nail knot about 4 inches long.
Give a twitch and settle and then repeat.

I use it almost exclusively at ice out in early spring. I have tried double jigs many, many, times and the results are pretty much identical to one jig. Marabou jig with a nibble is my go to but the last few years i have used more gulp minnows and less feathers for this

I have thrown some streamers on a float with split shots in the past, it works great! but i didn't like the split shot as they moved, so I ended up tying my own jigs. Recently I have steered away from lead hooks and bought ton of slotted tungsten beads that fly anglers like to use and just have hooks. very easy to slide up onto a jig and just tie away. eco friendly and they can be made prepainted :) but yeah light small jigs can be thrown far on a float and it just flat out slays!

I mainly target bluegills , but catch a little bit of everything.
My main float and fly combo is a single micro jig ; 1/80th and 1/64th jigs . Prefer the 1/80th because it falls slower and acts more natural under a 3/4” round weight snap on styrofoam float .
I have tried a double jig rig but found the tangled aren’t worth the effort .
I didn’t see any increase in catches .
Since I use tiny hand tied jigs , adding another changes how the jigs swim under the bobber .
I like a ripple on the water , it works my jig for me .

This is my setup. I tie balanced jig flies in many different patterns. The floats are comet brand from Walmart. The balanced jigs are very easy to tie using brass or tungsten beads. Couldn't count how many crappie and bluegill I have caught on these not to mention the stray white, yellow and black bass not targeted. Late winter thru spring most of the time. Wow I cannot believe I missed this post... I use it alot for guills...it may not be a true float n fly but do use a small fly and bobber to catch em and man does it work well!
