How often do you clean and lube reels?
When I notice the slightest variation of performance.
No less than once a year. But this past year has not been a good one for reel maintenance. I send mine out and due to Covid-19 a lot of the shops were closed or way behind. Once a year works for me now as I have about a dozen reeks that I use…swapping up most trips out. Back when I owned only one UL reel I would have it done twice a year. I used to have my Shimano reels done and they told me as much as I fished….5 days a week at the time..,,I should have them serviced 3-4 times a year. More often than not when I would send a reel into Shimano they would just send me a brand new one back…pretty good deal there. My nephew a while back sent in 5 Ci 4 reels and they sent him 5 of the latest model back…not bad for 100 bucks.

Honestly I’ve never really done any, but I bought a reel maintenance kit a couple weeks ago and plan to go through all my reels before I put them up for the winter as well as go over my ice fishing reels before that starts.
Little oil and grease never hurts
Just hit ‘‘em with some WD -40. Works wonders and is 90% fish oil anyway, so fish love it,,,
It is a Water Displacer. Not much of a lubricant. It does work very well for machining aluminum. Keeps the aluminum from gumming up on the tooling.
Quinn & Alphahawk are both correct .... there's no "fish oil" in WD-40
WD-40 is basically petroleum base oil & hydrocarbons.
And the company put out a disclaimer that says it does not recommend using it as a "fish attractant". ( While WD-40® can be used to help protect fishing equipment from rust and corrosion, WD-40 Company does not recommend using WD-40® to attract fish.)
I usually do a light lube every year when I re-spool my crappie gear, but about every three years,
I'll do a complete tear-down, thorough cleaning, and complete greasing and lubing of everything.
The Pflueger President came apart tonight. Oiled and lubed up. Smooth as when it was new
No fish oil in WD40!! - I better quit makin fish gravy with it![emoji226][emoji226][emoji3]

I know people that spray it on their hands to ease arthritis pain. They swear it works. Pretty sure it is the placebo effect at work there. All that really matters is it gives them some relief
I have been known to do that in the past
I heard wd40 was 70% kerosene. It's really a cleaner, not a lubricant.
I know a guy that uses petroleum jelly. On his reels that is. LOL
I would say the reel grease that I bought is very similar to petroleum jelly. Likely all it is in a fancy squeeze tube. Possibly some additives
I believe you are right on the kerosene being a major component. Have used WD40 to start a stubborn diesel truck.
Highly flammable.
“WD-40 does not contain fish oil, contrary to a popular myth, nor does it contain silicone, kerosene, water, wax, graphite, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).”
“The main ingredient is Stoddard solvent, also known as Varsol”
