What's the selling point of the hatchet head? What does it do exactly? I've noticed lots of videos with people using them.
I’ve heard some say faster fall rate and see better on livescope. I’m not buying that. To me just another hook with weight on it and another style of head to fish with. I’m thinking about modifying one 1/8oz cavity to weedless to see maybe if it will be more “weedless” with that shape of head.
I think it doesn’t fall straight depending on how the head hits the water but my main reason for liking them is I think they come off branches a little better. I don’t think I get hung as bad. I still lose plenty but not as bad as other head styles. Guess it kicks it sideways maybe. Plus they make a very pretty hand tie.
You both said they might be more weedless. I'll be interested in your updates.
If they're more weedless, I'd save 10 lbs of lead a year. :HandsClapping Do either one of you think they'd be less likely to wrap around a tree limb 26 times? I get hung up enough, but my son loves to squirrel hunt with crappie jigs. :Rofl
I read that the shape was for dealing with rocky areas.
Yes I’m thinking shape of head might help snags. I’m going to take it a step farther and add a fiberguard.
I’ve tied the Richard Gene mono weed guard on them and fished them a very very long time on heavy brush. Go slow and don’t panic and no problems. Done this for a long time. Usually I’m lazy and don’t tie on the weed guard and still does ok in brush but not as well as with mono weed guard but still better than round types of jigs.
I’m talking about the fiberguard that is like 6-8 strands mono. Going to cut the mold to allow it when pouring.
Yes I know I was just telling my experience with it. What your talking about should really help them be weedless.
You are going to cut that brand new mold ?
Man…… I would be so nervous about ruining it that I would ruin it. LOL
I never understood how the fibers don’t just melt when you’re pouring.
Doc you have not lived yet. You have to want something pretty bad to do it but when it turns out good your skipping. When it turns out bad you are ordering a new mold. Been doing both over the years.
Modded it to accept Mustad X2 Ultra Points. Only 29 cents a hook!

Very nice, very clean. Looks like they would catch Moby Dick….lol.
Hydrodynamic!
Let me know when your ready to sell some,,,,,very nicely done!
Fat wire and chemically sharpened. I have used the Ultra Point circle hooks for years.
Have you had issues where the fish straighten the 1x hooks ?
No I haven’t, the issue I’m having over the last couple years is getting hooks with the eye not being closed all the way. Since not using Matzuo I’ve had issues with multiple companies. I even started paying a premium for the mustad j hook black chrome and would still get batches of eyes not being closed. I would try pinching shut and at times the eye would break other times my braid would still slip right through the gap no matter how much I was able to pinch shut. Would even happen at times using palomar knot too. So my thinking was to get a hook with a shorter distance between the eye and the hook shank so that the eye gap would sit just inside the jighead. I don’t mind paying extra for a hook to accomplish this as I’m not selling and is worth the cost over losing a fish. Also don’t have time to be gluing the gap on every hook and painting the eye of the hook would kill my OCD.
