On Wheeler Lake in North Alabama. Most structure holding fish in 15 fow of water are starting to feed. Fish are holding in the deeper 1/3 of their column Still mainly just 7-8 inch fish but their thump is starting to come back.

Saw schools of shad at the surface all over yesterday.

3 out of 4 , lakes in the last 3 days had a bite so light it defies imagination , everyone says "they are not biting " , that is not the case !
they have been large and in charge and in numbers and all I can tell you is thank goodness for sensitive tackle and small jigs !
lake 4 fish were more aggressive and on their northern journey to go up the river .
we will not likely drop a jig in lake 5 today , we are supposed to go tubing in Ed's new tube puller .....:Rofl
Bait is in abundance on the lakes I've been fishing and one of the reasons we're having to work so hard for a good box of fish.....
Good thing is my recent few trips the fish have been thumping aggressive and you know that's always good.....
One thing I'll say is they definitely prefer some colors over others and size must be small...... Several missed and light hits on the wrong color/size bait for me......
Yes today was tough. Worked hard just to not get skunked. I think the bite was starting to improve in the afternoon but I was ready to go. Like you said bait was everywhere, an all you can eat buffet.
we put an anchor down yesterday on Ez's big ole living room boat and the best and first fish of the stop about jerked the pole right out of my hand :yikes
One day it is the next it ain't and in some cases one hour it is the next it ain't..... and you can sometimes go down even further than that.....
SuperDave336 what reaction are you seeing on the scope? Are the fish turning away? Are they at least following the bait?
I might have to make a special trip up there to fish with y'all soon.....
I had different reactions at different places but overall very little interest in anything I used. I changed probably 6 times and showed them everything that normally works. I probably should have dug deep in my tackle box for some off the wall stuff. I figured small was the ticket but I did throw a larger gray/orange split tail. Caught one on small white Limits Tackle split tail. One on the small black and blue stinger one. One on chartreuse stinger. I even tried the gray tadpole which normally smokes them and nothing. Nibbles/Slab Sauce helped and even had some pecks but never had that good thump. Some days are like that, others are opposite. I'm a weekend warrior and just do best I can and call it a day. As long as I'm not skunked I consider it a win. Been a long long time since I smelled a skunk. Just makes me think about it all week and motivate me for next weekend.
Hmm, I didn't try any of my pretty hand ties.... I'm sure that's what they wanted:biggrin
Fairly slow and they were hitting very light yesterday afternoon. About 50% smalls but my grandson caught his personal best.
about to have a real cold front move thru and I am heading to my cabin to fish a little but to put in some squirrels for deer season meals!
Our bite has improved in the past 2 weeks. Hurricane Ida left enough water to raise the lower Mississippi River complex several feet and that added some much needed fresh water to several of the lakes we fish. With the water falling as much as 2 feet a day, the fish responded and are hitting practically any jig in front of them. Most fish are in the 6-10 foot range which seemed to vary with the amount of sun hitting the water. I'd give the present bite an 8 of 10
front ran thru hard yesterday and the fish count was 32 in an hour at lunch time , about half were good fish .
bite varied from slack lines to hammer hits , all over the map and no fish in the deeper end of the dock .
liked it slightly rising and or dragging it in a upward angle , no scope to see what was going on down there .
just feeling my way around all blind as a bat .....:Rofl
The surprise of that THUMP from a blindly fished jig is about as good as it gets...... On the other hand seeing that crappie and getting your jig within its site and seeing it slowly work its way to your jig and inhale it is purdy amazing also.....
Moral of my story here is all crappie fishing is amazing even if you use minnas.....:highfive
