Recently saw a video on youtube on brushpile fishin and they were fishing Arkabutla in Miss. He was spider riggin and going 1-1.4mph which to me, is pretty fast. Was using heavy weights keeping baits down and understand conceptbut....my question is....
What determines your speed...normally I like 0.4-0.5 but under what co ditions should I speed or slow down? Figured in heat of summer would've been more sluggish needing slower presentation.....

I like what the fish like. As in I note I caught my first fish 6feet down in 11fow going down hill at
.8mph then adjust as needed

But what makes you decide....imma gonna start 2 oz weights and haul it.....vs starting with 1/2 oz and cruisin
That speed is not "traditional" Spider Rigging speed IMHO. That's pretty much the/my traditional Pushing speed ... 1oz/1mph/jigs -- 2oz/1.5mph/cranks.
Spider Rigging is also normally associated with using minnows and approaching cover or open water schools at the normal speed of a wandering school of Shad ... normally @ 0.5mph or less.
BUT ... that's just MY interpretation and view on the differences between Spider Rigging & Pushing. I see Spider Rigging as the subtle/precise approach, and Pushing as the reaction bite/cover more water approach.
Pappy is right....those speeds are power trolling. Spider rigging is slow about .2 mph and slower.
Past experiences and mentoring from a fellow named Patrick "Fuzz" Dobbins. And I cant stand to hear the slapping of the waves on the bow going fast. Speed can also be equated to depth. A faster troll will raise the presentation up. I often make S patterns with the boat causing one side to speed up and shallow up while the other side slows down. And I absolutely love to cut the TM off let it coast awhile then reverse the motor and fish backwards a few 100 feet. All of these things are "My" preference. Sometimes we get caught up in defining what it is we are actually doing and the message gets lost. But years ago when I was first taught...a true spider rig meant that you used different length poles and actually fished with your back to where you are headed. I push poles.Quote:

I push jigs usually 1 mph to 1.5 mph depending on the style of jig I am using. This is what i do to determine what speed i go. I will start zigzagging and if fish bite on the side that speeds up and is running shallower I speed up and if I catch them on the side that slows down I slow down...

I push 3/8 oz double minnow rigs at .2 mph
1/2 oz a little faster.
Those are my 2 main weights.
Takes me a long time to cover much water but I fish where there is a lot of brush and structure.

The time of the year also. Power trolling usually is done post spawn through the hot summer months. The idea is to generate a reaction strike. When they hit it, they hit it hard. I did see a recent video where they Power Troll shallow spawn/ pre-spawn with great results.
Thanks everyone. Enjoyed reading the discussions. I prefer the slower dragging of minnows I never wanna pass up opportunity to learn something new.
