I aint trying to pick on anyone ,but I have seen this now for a good bit and the "people " that are the "experts" say that there big ole whopper black crappie the fella caught in new york is a white crappie ?:dono
is it just me or are those there "experts" totally lost on what species of crappie it is ?:dono

DNA - never thought of that sure fire way of confirming species origin. Sure, a fish from the south with their longer growing season could have been transported north, but without a DNA test was the fish from NY parents or even born in NY? Do most of the crappie in the water it was caught have similar DNA? Have many crappie have been caught in that water are over 14" - white or black crappie? Being a private lake I suspect it should have quite a few, but except for reasons of pollution, our useless NYSDEC rarely checks any water for fish quality or quantity and are the last agency I would trust for record keeping.
Sure don't look like a White Crappie to me. Kinda hard to tell from the picture, but I'm counting 5 dorsal spines (possibly 6 :dono ) which would, in fact, be a White Crappie. :yikes
A lady here in KY thought she'd caught a World Record Black Crappie, until DNA analysis deemed it to be a hybrid (white/black crappie offspring) ... rendering it a State Record Crappie (KY doesn't delineate between the two), but not a World Record.

My first thought when seeing this picture was ... White Crappie ... due to the pattern of vertical black blotches to the right of her left hand. Then I counted the dorsal spines at 7 spines and realized why it was thought to be a Black Crappie.
All states have population densities in major cities. NYC is to the southern end and no way an example of the rest of the state. Agriculture covers thousands of square miles as do mountains and forests. Within 45 minutes there are over two dozen excellent waters to fish and beyond that over 100. Our growing season may be shorter than southern states (though I'm sure equal to Ohio), but quality and quantity can be caught in most waters.Quote:

I hate the city (NYC) and the rat race and would never live or work close to it or any large city for that matter. Country air, peace & quiet. YES!

It's difficult to make out the markings that make it either a black or white including the number of dorsal spines. I don't trust NYC DEC to make that determination and for all I know it's (sarcastically) a hybrid. With no way to confirm where the fish was caught, there's no way to prove it came from that particular private N.Y.S. water or out-of-state.Quote:

One other little known or forgotten fact is NY shares a border with the Upper Delaware River. With cold water releases from the dams the UD has some of the finest trout (maybe blue ribbon) and smallmouth fishing in the US, and you are only about 45 miles or so from NYC! Hiding in plain sight! I have always wanted to try the PA side, but access is private for the most part and you need to float it. Sorry to get off topic, but wanted to say something.

Clarification:
there's no way to prove it came from that particular private N.Y.S. water or out-of-state.
Meaning, the fish and others like it may have been imported from another state and stocked. If so, would it still qualify as a state record fish? It would be easy to blow away any size record for any species.
This report of a U.S. record crappie mentions hybrid crappie:
A 5-Pound, 7-Ounce, 19.25-inch-long black crappie was weighed by a Tennessee wildlife officer on certified scales, and witnesses to the catch and the weighing were on hand. The fish also went through DNA testing by the state to make sure it was a black crappie, not a white crappie or hybrid. The fish is the current IGFA all-tackle record for black crappie, as well as the Tennessee state record. A massive crappie (4-pounds, 4-ounces) previously from the same pond. (I guess the gene pool was in the pool.)
But even then, regardless of where the crappie originated from (native to where) (i.e. a shocked water from another state), should it still count as a state record fish that was caught using bait ?
I figured any true crappie fisherman would know the vertical stripes & pointy nose means "white" and the missing vertical stripes & more snub nose means "black."
