really soft little peck in 14 foot of water about 12 feet down , then the line slacks just a touch , set the hook as I am sure its a soft summer crappie bite on a large plastic .
the spins begins and round and round we go .....:Rofl

Tell the truth..... You thought it was aahh crappie....LOL
Speaking of the crappie let me tell ya they are liiiiightly taking the jig right now and the absolute heaviest you want to use is a 1/32...... Be careful cause you'll miss them if you're not paying really close attention.....

so soft is the take on the crappie right now is that you almost have to just imagine a hit and set the hook just for grins
Nice catch! It's that time of year. I had light bites last night, even when I was using live shad for bait.
Strange thing to me. When I'm just jigging for crappie under the boat or casting and retrieving jigs I'm not sure I know when to set the hook. Bite is awfully soft! Makes me wonder how many I miss that I don't feel? I like my slip bobber, no doubt when it goes under!
That’s a pretty Gill and good sized too. Love the finesse bite. I feel so many more now with the tiny braid that I now think mono bites are kinda mushy. There have been many times that I’ve seen more bites than felt. A line that suddenly goes still or wiggles wrong, or a float that just does something it shouldn’t. The bites on the rise are the best when we figure em out.
The braid sure helps me feel the soft bites. A lot of times I will have shot in btween the tubes on a toon the line will be in contact with the boat due to small space to keep the rod in contact with the jig as it falls. You can feel a bite, or the sudden loss of contact with the jig.
When I am jigging for crappie I quite often watch for a bite more than try to feel a bite ,especially during the summer months .
But when the bluegill start biting that light you know it’s a really soft bite .
Their biting so soft, we use the force to figure when you have a bite!

remember sets are free! might look like a fool on occasion with nothing there but then again, who cares? anything seems odd BOOM. this is the time that to cast and bring back in slowly and suddenly they are on.
a crappie Jedi will in fact ketch fish when they are not even biting , been there and done that a few times :Rofl
It makes me smile when folks that are watching say , you didn't even get a bite and you set the hook !
one fella in particular was watching me in the shade one summer day drinking beer and just observing .
he kept saying "that just beats all " you are ketchn them even when they are not biting ...
I said no sir they are biting and biting well you just don't see and feel , what I see and feel . :highfive
to be sure lots of folks think when I set the hook and come up empty I am just playing around , not so to be sure and if I set the hook ,it is highly likely that it was a bite and that is a fact ,hooksets might be free but to be sure as heck I don't waste them very often :Rofl
we have a saying , if ANYTHING isn't normal, set the hook , it is for sure a crappie playing hard to get :highfive
we also say imagine how many bites that fella got that said they are not biting and went home with an empty livewell . some days when we top 150 to 200 fish we hear folks say they are not biting today and we always leave chuckling going ok sure ...whatever you say rotfl
