I’m looking at a stradic 1000 and seeing that I really have two choices. One is the 5 to 1 gear ratio with a shallow spool or the 6 to 1 gear ratio with the deeper spool. Which do you see to be an advantage and why?

I don't like horsing in fish, so a lower gear ratio would be my choice. I have one shallow spool reel and I don't see a major difference, other than less line is needed to fill it.
Thanks for the response. I saw the 78 pages of background on the reels but I just haven’t had time to read it all. Plus a lot of it is out of my price range. Still a. Work in progress.
I never needed a deep spool in freshwater reels, and can't imagine needing it in any reel in 1000 size. As for the gear, it depends on what you plan to use it for. I can see advantages of lower gear with slow presentations, though I haven't found much of a difference myself. In this case it will be about 10 cm difference in hoisting length per handle revolution.
I assume the 6.0 gear version with deep spool is USDM and the 5.1 gear version with shallow spool is JDM. The latter won't have any warranty, that's something to consider. You can of course always fill the deep spool with backing, just not my preference.
Stradic FL is an excellent reel for about $170.
I like low ratio reels for working micro plastics. When using 2# test line….using a 1.5 gram jig head…..a low ratio reel is a must for keeping it deep in the water column. If you watch any of my videos when I’m fishing the mooring cells below Nickajack catching the Spotted bass and crappie it is all on low ratio reels. The low ratio reels are key in my success there in 21 feet of water. Most of my fishing is done with micro plastics. I do have one high speed reel…..it is a Shimano Twin Power. I use it if I want to burn a spinner bait in shallow water. I don’t use it much. As to shallow spools. I prefer them over deep spools. As has been said you use less line…..but I feel you can get somewhat better casting distance. Plus I use some really fine lines…..some of them in the .090 mm diameter. They just do not work well on deep spool reels. I also use a lot of polyester line…..using only about 50-60 meters on a spool and it works well with the shallow spools. Everyone says you can use backing on a deep spool reel, and that’s true….I just prefer not to fool with that. The last US Domestic market reel I owned was a deep spool Shimano Stradic 1000. It held 240 yards of 2# test line….a big waste of line. I have landed 20 inch Smallies using the 2.3# test ester lines and have never come close to being spooled even though I only had 50 meters of line on the reel. The low ratio reels not only work well for panfish….Smallies….Spots…..but trout also. I am currently looking to get a new Zenon reel but none of the 1000 S models are in the market yet….I would get the 2000 model but it is high speed…the 1000 is low speed. As you can tell I am a big fan of low ratio reels…LOL.

If you've ever tried to work a lure across the breaking wave in the surf, you'd know why they made extra high gear models...
I think one of the main reasons for choosing high gear in saltwater is casting distances – comes in handy when you need to retrieve about 50-60 yards of line before you can cast and work the lure again.
This has been the info I was looking for, thanks everyone. I looked a a used Stradic 1000 ci4 last week but it wasn’t what I was looking for, condition wise. Great looking reel. Up the gears were rough. Now I have to start snooping around in earnest.
Not to replace the idea of the stradic, it’s still on a front burner. Got a little cash unexpectedly a couple of days ago and found one of the 10 bearing Diawa Regal 1000 I’ve been looking for and had to try it. I have a 2500 and it’s unbelievably smooth for the price. It’s my favorite to keep in hand when I’m on the coast, if I can get it away from my daughter. Updates after it’s here and used some. Now I can be a little smarter while I look for a stradic or who knows—- maybe a ballistic.
Those new Regals look nice. I think that they are basically a Legalis with two more bearings (one is in the spool, so only comes into play when drag is pulled). I've enjoyed using my Legalis 1000 over the last few years. It's very smooth and light for a mere 50-60 dollars.
That’s the same price that the Regal was. It came yesterday and I spooled it with clear two pound backing and some new 2 lb Nanofil that came the same day. It doesn’t have a very deep spool but I don’t know if it’s considered a shallow spool. In the backyard it outcasts my favorite lightning rod by about 8’ or so. I put it on the TSS and the balance is great. It gets wet tomorrow morning. Probably going to have to fight the BlueGillgirl for this one too.
Good looking reel
Congrats.

It was the TCB combo that was 70 bucks. Congrats on the new rod.
Cheers

Jessie and I went this morning for about 3 hours to get a few more fish for tomorrow’s fry. Started while it was still dark fishing under bridge lights and got a few and added a few more after sunup. Total was 5 crappie and 5 good gills. As predicted, Jessie liked the TSS and the new reel and steadily put fish in the boat. I used it some and like it a lot, a great lightweight combo that I’m very pleased with. The reel worked smooth, flipped the bail dependably and the drag was flawless. I guess I’m frugal to a fault, hate to spend lots of money for most anything and second m guess myself after the fact. Maybe buyers remorse? None here for anything related to this. I have other good reels, mostly Presidents, but you can feel the difference between this and any of those including the one that’s two months old. I just may need another one day soon. Thanks for following along everyone. This isn’t one of the better reels y’all talk of often but it’s a good un for the money.

Fish what you like and feel comfortable with $ wise, Skeet. This sounds like a real nice combo and you may have to invest in a TCB sooner than later! LOL Your daughter knows a good combo when she fishes it!

I prefer high speed for river trout and so do most others. For slow deeper water or lakes then the lower speeds are fine.

I went to the salt this past Saturday and had a few rods with me. One is a 3000 size with a 5.2 ratio and my new Diawa Regal LT 2500 in the mix. I noticed the difference in the ability to reel back in quick for another cast. The 5.2 was very different speed wise. For over there I the bigger reels, I’ll be getting higher ratio reels. The Regal 1000 is a perfect match for the TSS and it’s 5.2 ratio is just fine for where and how I fish. If I find another with the higher gears for a fair price I will probably own it too. Very nice and smooth for my needs. Thanks to all for following this thread.
Hey Skeet, bringing this back up I like how you roll! It inspired me to purchase one today! I was thinking about the Pfluger you have commented on, but your review changed my mind.

Well as luck would have it the Dawia Regal 1000 I ordered was cancelled due to lack of inventory. I found a Regal 2000 and specs look the same.
Can anyone tell me difference?
Size of spool and line capacity, also the 2000 weighs 7/10 of an ounce more.

Alphahawk hit you with the specs that I didn’t have. I’ve held them both and they both feel about the same. The turn of the handle and slip of the drag, without them both being on rods side by side, would be hard to judge. Look into academy sports, they usually carry them in my area. Hope you find and are happy with what you’re looking for.
