I’m new to crappie fishing. Love it but it don’t love me back. I fish for 2 hours probably get a hundred good hard hits and not one fish in the boat. I set the hook and then a brief hard pull and fish gone.

I’m no pro at this game but I would say it’s one of the following
1) setting hook to hard and pulling hook out! Remember, they are called paper mouth for a reason.
2) may be to big of a hook! Size 2 is pushing it.

What setup are you using? What size hooks or jigs? Smaller jigs can be great but sometimes helps to slightly bend the hook out for a better hook set.
Need more info on how you’re fishing.
12 ft pole 1/32 oz jig that I did bend the hook out slightly. First tried to dress it with nibbles. Just pulling it off no fish. Tried using a small minnow on the jig. Just stealing my minnow. Used a large syringe to put nibbles inside the tube jig. Same thing. Hard hit 1/2 second hard pull off goes the fish. Using live scope drop the jig right in there face and can see them take it tried bigger jigs, different colors nothing works. Mabe not ment to be.

will your hooks stick in your thumb nail? Maybe dull hooks? Sounds like you are doing it right to me.
I think you're fishing in a bunch of small bream / perch and there mouth to small for the bait and hook. Just a guess.:twocents
Are you sure it's Crappie ?? A hard hit & quick pull & gone sounds more like Bluegill to me .... especially when you say the Nibbles & minners are yanked off so easily.
Guessing bream as well.
Not sure what they are never caught anything. Sure looked like crappie from other outings experience. But I’m not very experienced in any kind of fishing or live scope especially. Thanks for the reply’s. I hope with you guys helping I will be able to have some good stories that I have read here in these forms.

My initial reaction was that it is bream. But even at that, if you got a hundred hits, it seems impossible that you didn't snag one!
Do yourself a favor and book a day with a good guide.
Tell him you’re more interested in learning than in filling the freezer.
Little Gaspergou can drive you nuts biting like that and they look like crappie on the sonar too.
not sure , possibly bream , but with a 1/32 you should hook a few of them .
don't bend out the hook , that ain't helping you none for sure .
hard to diagnose without actually being in the boat beside you .

Try using a Sabiki rig and don't set the hook- let the fish keep hitting until you get one on. Tip it with a small piece of worm if necessary. My guess is small perch and not crappie down there.
Not familiar with a Sabiki rig. Could you explain. Also thanks to all you guys for you advice. Could you all tell me what size jig and what size hook should I use. What size line. I bought 2 of the BnM 12 foot duck dynasty poles put 6 lbs clear line on them. Seems to break off awful easy.

Just drop one nibbles on a size 8# hook down there and see if that's Bluegill .
Didn’t give up. Red as a lobster from staying all day. Did finally start catching fish but missed so many.
This happened this past Monday morning. Got there early just before day break water was calm to a slight ripple. Pulled in to the tree top and it was loaded with fish. Dropped a jig in the water watched it go down, a fish went right to it and bamm a hard hit set the hook then a hard pull…. then gone. I was excited, thought I was going to load the old bass tracker. This went on for several hours. They finally just quit biting. After lunch time the tables finally turned and I wind up with 19 nice fish. But missed so many. I don’t mean a few. I mean a lot. That morning I couldn’t buy a fish but had more than my share of opportunity.

Well I don't have much experience catching crappie but something I noticed pretty quick is their mouth is little tuffer than toilet paper! I've had a bunch fall off trying to lift them into the boat so these days I use a net! If they just aren't getting to the boat my guess is your setting the hook to hard. The best thing for fixing the hook set is experience!

Lot of guy's seem to like long rods for crappie, I don't understand it. My favorite crappie rod is an UL 5' long! It can cast a 1/16th oz jig farther than I actually need to cast. I think the really best length all around it 6' to 7' rods. There may be a good reason for those long rods but I fail to get it, unless of course ya simply didn't want to cast! Come to think of it, in my distant past I had a 10 cane pole I fished with. Seems I only had about 8' of line on it, worked! Wouldn't surprise me that line would seem to break easier with a longer rod, you have more leverage! On my 5' rod I use 2# line. On my 6.5' and 7' rods I have 6# only because I couldn't find 4# when I was looking for line. Keep in mind that the biggest crappie I've ever seen where I fish was only 13" and then just that one! Why would I need heavier line? But it's a personal thing. Guy want's to use 80# braid for crappie, that's his business and if it suits him, good choice!

In my opinion it's not possible to set the hook to fast or too hard. It is possible to play a fish too hard and try reel it in too fast. But I guess it's also possible to play one too slow.

The thump you feel with a crappie is the jig hitting the back of his throat. If it’s a Gill it’s sometimes an eat and sometimes a hit and spit,and they’re lightning fast. Without knowing everything I need is to know I’ll suggest a few things. Too stiff a rod for the cross your eyes hookset that you may be delivering. A softer rod and a snap of the wrist is all that’s needed.
I watched Hank Parker in a video once and he was coaching a young person with a very large bass. I learned a lot from that. The main takeaway for me was to be calm, keep your excitement in check. Do everything slow and think about it first. It isn’t a wrestling match where you have to get him to the boat as fast as you can. Your main objective is to stay buttoned up. There was a lot of good info in that two minutes of video. Keep thinking over what you’ve done so far and fine tune what you already do and pay attention to the results of those changes. If you’re getting hit that much then I would say you’re close. The way I fish isn’t for everyone but you’ll learn a lot about crappie behavior. I have downsized to light action rods, 7’ or less, and 2lb line, but 4 will do while you’re learning. My jigs are 1/32 or less and my jigs are usually just over an inch. I sometimes start with a 1/32 and a 2” body and they slow down and quit. Then I pick up the light rod with the tiny jig and keep catching fish without missing a beat. Good luck going forward and keep us posted cuz you now have people paying attention to what’s happening and want to know how to fix it.
get you some sickle hooks and don't be afraid to set the hook like you mean it , the paper part of the lip ain't all that much and some of the bone area in the roof of the mouth is hard a rock .Quote:

Make sure your hooks are sharp. Get a hook sharpener, the hook point should be able to stick in your fingernail ,if it slides off it's dull.Quote:

Just got off the water. When to the same tree top and the scope lit up with fish the same as Monday. Put a jig down and bam pulled instead of trying to snatch his lips off and a good pull and gone. Tube pulled down but no fish. Put a minnow on the jig and got bit in half. No fish. Put a Trailer hook on it and got him. A goofy looking fish called a goggle eye. The tree top is full of them. Caught a few more and left that spot. Found crappie and fished until the storms ran me off( about 10:30).
