What is the best overall store for jig tying supplies. I have a few buck tails and feather but need some chenille.
Is there a particular kind of chenille that is better than others?
On the subject of thread, I have a number 6 flat (superfly) thread that came with a kit. It broke on me several times. I have ceramic tipped bobbins so I don't think they were the trouble. Is there a better size thread or brand of thread to use?
Looking forward to getting into this hobby.
PM Skip on here....he has some of the best chenille around. Custom colors too. Regarding thread, most times I use 210 denier flat wax.
These guys will will fix you up for sure. I use Hagens and Barlows but Skip can set up quick and easy. PM him. As far as tying thread I use Kevlar the most as I tie walleye jigs the most, Skip and the rest of these folks will have better jig tying choices. Welcome to the madness of tying with us.
Skip has a large selection although I haven't got a chance to order anything from him. Woods and water outdoors has some really nice stuff also with some custom chenilles I had never seen also. As of right now those two are at the top of my ordering list for sure.

Yup there are several places to order from but hard to beat Skip and Patrick. I used Danville 210 denier flat wax thread.

What has already been said is spot on. I find 140 denier thread easier to hide on smaller jigs but use a lot of 210 also. I’ve found that if you spread the arms on your bobbin and pay attention to how you pull thread off the spool when using the 70 denier it will break less. That bobbin will only work well with 70 as spreading the arms reduces the pressure on the spool and the other threads work better with a little more tension. I have and regularly use 4 bobbins, easier than changing thread. Welcome to the addiction.

I will concur with what has already been said, and will also add a bit to what was suggested to me. On the tail material, you can cut it back to about 1/4th what your using their. you will have more movement in the water. Also as Dave suggested, use the natural tips on the hair and feathers, and if you need to trim the length of tail, trim the end that was cut before attaching it to the hook. your tail tips will turn out more natural, have more movement. Those jigs look good for first time ties, no doubt, and will catch fish. If you don't hang them up and loose them, hold onto them. put them in a box, and in about 6 months, and then every six months or so, break them out and compare them to others you had recently tied.
Something that helps me learn and stay focused, is watch fly and jig tying videos on YouTube every chance you get. It does help. Oh yea, I almost forgot THE most important thing...Welcome to the hobby of jig and fly tying. It's fun, unjoyful, relaxing, and frustrating all at once. And the feeling you get when you catch that first fish on a jig/fly you tied yourself, theirs nothing like it...Enjoy and have fun. Let your imagination run wild. Welcome.

The reason we don’t go past the tip of the hook with the chenille is that it starts to fill the hook gap. This will help the fish say goodbye before you get to meet them. Some of mine are actually shorter than that and I see no reduction in hits. I tie one that is on a #8 hook and a 1/32 with4 pieces of rubber leg material and 3 turns of small chenille and a bare head. Works surprisingly well for an experiment when I was bored at the bench once. If you want to see simple, look up a Popeye jig.
