Treated myself to Fathers Day trip and Lake Sibley did not disappoint this morning. Pulled Bandit 300's and caught 19 crappie and 8 Kitty Cats . Not a bad day on the water , but it was hot. nice catch & mess of slabs... I have never had much luck on that lake for crappie... I guess I need to spent more time on the water there...

Do you lose a lot of baits doing this?
That depends on how willing you are to get near structure. I try to stay where I know the open water is free of snags. I think my brother told me he lost one bait yesterday. I've been pulling crank baits since 2016 and I have probably lost 10-15 baits. Half of those losses went to gar or catfish. So it does happen.Quote:

P.S. A little trick I learned. I put about a 3' leader of braid between the mono and my bait. That keeps the toothy garfish and the catfish fins from cutting my line.
I just use braid and straighten the hook. Like to ricochet those baits off something to trigger a strike.

I lost one bait Sunday , it was a Strike KIng 3XD and they tend to run a little deeper than the Bandits . Probably got to close to the shore line too.
I was more worried about losing baits to the vicious catfish that were biting. I'm using 10 lb mono and run depth colored 20lb braid on two spinning reels.
Put a 24 V 80 lb Fortrex troll motor on my boat earlier this year and having 24 volts compared to 12 volts makes a big difference.
I'm another crank bait puller and went straight to 30# braid. Like everyone else said garfish catfish barfish and snags are some of the problems pulling cranks. I will add we are targeting predominantly white crappie which tend to roam open water searching for bait as opposed to the black crappie that tend to be more structure orientated, not saying we won't catch a black every now and then. Just my 2 cents.
I appreciate all the tips fellas. May have to give this a shot. Guess the first step is gonna be setting up some rod holders.
How many rods do you guys typically troll and how far behind the boat?
I troll with 8 rods. Before jumping off into all of this head on over to the Mississippi Board and read the sticky at the top of the page "Cranking 101". That's what started me down this road. Good luck.Quote:

I do well in February at Sibley. But I will start pulling cranks soon. Never did that before. Got me a new Minn Kota Terrova being put on right now. I'm heading over to Miss. forum to Crankbaiting 101 to learn how to do it. I have a few old crankbaits from my bass fishing days. They're probably 40 years old, but they look the same as they did when they were new.

Pulling cranks is relaxing and addictive , brings back memories of trolling for Speckled Trout in Lake Pontchartrain with my Father and Brother when we lived down South.
