Wilbur at Reedsburg Dam!
Attachment 404269
I took Wilbur (and Chilli the Wonder Wiener) to Reedsburg Dam today. This is the first substantial dam on the Muskegon River downstream of Houghton Lake. Our goal was to catch enough eating size crayfish for dinner, which I haven't done in years. We did not succeed, but I did learn a couple things.
1) I'm not nearly as quick as I used to be.
2) There are just as many deerflies and horseflies as there used to be.
BTW, what's wrong with this picture?
Attachment 404272
These are (mostly) mature oak trees around Reedsburg Dam. They have been 90% defoliated by gypsy moths. There are thousands of acres of forest like this in Roscommon County.
thanks for sharing wilburs travels!
i have not had crayfish since i was a kid, used to camp on a river and they and frogs were fair game
Reedsburg backwater is a great place for bullfrogs! I haven't done that in years, either.
Bring Wilber down to Louisiana and we will treat you to a crawfish boil. And if you say crayfish we will immediately ship you home on a bus.
Attachment 404434
Danny, you gonna have some pee-can pie at that boil?
:Rofl LOL "D". I worked in Louisiana during the summer of 1984, which is the 1st place I had crawfish! At a big restaurant in Lake Charles, I can't remember the name of the place. Anyway, they were so good that when we came back to Michigan, we decided to try to catch some of our own, and the Muskegon River below Reedsburg Dam was the place we tried. To our surprise, this was a resounding success, so much so that we started having crawfish parties every June. We would have 2 guys run a 10 foot seine, with several kids on either side and ahead, kicking them out of the sand grass. We could get 10 gallons in an hour.
As far as the bus ride, been there and done that too. That same year, I rode a Greyhound from McComb, MS, to Detroit. It took 2 days. Best advertisement for airlines that I've ever experienced.
Wilbur on Houghton Lake!
Attachment 404849
Took Wilbur out on the home water today. On the right is my anti "bake on the lake" device. This is the first time I've been fishing since Crappie Camp.
We caught about 8 of these guys (cough, cough).
Attachment 404850
And we came home with 2 wallys and a jumbo gill.

wilbur enjoys all types of fishing!!!!
That's good, because I do too, and whining is not tolerated! :fish
HOLY COW!! I CAUGHT WILBUR SMOKIN' OUT BY THE GARAGE!!
No, really. Were making this year's batch of smoked steelhead and whitefish.

Attachment 407440
Apparently I was a bad influence on Wilbur when I had him. I was a smoker then too...glad your getting him out and about.

wilbur just likes the smell of fish.any fish.:cheers2
Wilbur at Homestead Dam, on the Betsie River. He did not bring luck. To be fair, though, I stink at salmon fishing.
Attachment 408842
Wilbur at East Tawas State Dock! He's all strapped in and ready for the long walk. Today's quarry is whitefish.
Attachment 412921
The State Dock has a metal rail about 18" wide. I made these custom rod holders from the super magnets in old hard drives, from the days when I used to do a lot of computer work.
Attachment 412922
Here's the nice 12 foot rod I won at Crappie Camp, looking for it's first fish! I gave the other one to my son. I have this one rigged for vertical jigging, set at about 10 feet. Small jigs tipped with wax worms is the bait.
Attachment 412924
My other 2 rods are rigged with Everlasting Slip Bobbers of course! Eventually, I went with bobbers on all 3 rods.
Attachment 412925
Here's the entire set up, including 18' net. It's a LONG way to the water on the State Dock!
Attachment 412926
I fished for about 6 hours, and wound up with 2. This will be Wilbur's last trip until sometime in March, when we will be chasing steelhead.
Attachment 412927
Overwhelming ingenuity. Great job.
Now those rod holder are awesome.
nice job getting out and even getting a couple fish.
Wilbur does not care what he fishes for!! :)
i used your slip bobbers in Erie this fall for perch, 24 ft of water and they worked perfect, not one hang up.
Awesome, John, I'm glad they worked well for you!
Wilbur appears to be well traveled.
Good job on the rod holders
By the way, the Tawas State Dock has a web cam. To see the action, go here: Tawas Bay Weather Station- Dockcamera
Watch for the nets going in the water!
Wilbur at Singing Bridge!
Attachment 426011
I took this picture on 4/12, which was the first day my favorite steelhead stream was fishable this year. In a normal year, I am DONE by the 12th of April. The AuGres E. Branch was still fast and muddy, and we did not get a bite. Then, 2 more weeks of rain, snow, snain, what have you, followed. Yesterday, I finally caught this little 5 lb. spawned out hen, which I released. Pretty much my worst steelhead season in over 2 decades.

Up next: Back to the scene of the crime! Spring fishing on Houghton Lake!
:ThumbsUp
I will bet the canals will be hot!! Have fun!!!

Wilbur back on Houghton Lake!
Attachment 427288
From now until mid June, Houghton Lake will give up loads of fat crappies - if you know where and how to fish them. Weed bed edges are the key, those that drop quickly into 12 (or more) feet of water. Find the cabbage on those edges, and you'll find the crappies. Just Steve was fishing such a weed bed at last year's camp, but he stayed on top of it instead of focusing on the edges.
I named the 12' rod I won at camp last year the Wilbur rod. Here it is ready to fish. It's got a 1/32 oz. white jig tipped with a new bait, a "meggie" (basically a jumbo mousie), set at 8 feet. I caught about 5 fish on this rig, including a nice 12 inch crappie. So, the Wilbur rod has caught whitefish, steelhead, crappies, and pike in his first year.
Attachment 427294
First crappie of the year is this little 10" throwback.
Attachment 427295
Here's a better one, 12". This one went in the well.
Attachment 427296
All told, I took home 8 and a pike. Biggest crappie is 13". I caught probably 3 dozen, but most were under 11". It will only get better as we get closer to June!
Attachment 427298
Yeah, we're getting them down here too except ours are on the beds. We used to come your way in the spring and get a few but haven't in a few years.
This time of year sure makes for fun fishing. Nice mess, catching them on them long rods sure is a blast!!! Go Wilbur...

Great seeing you. Thanks for bringing Wilber. You da man :notworthy
Nice to see you again, ESB. You missed a good time but we understand those kinds of prior comittments. Get us on your calendar for next year, same place but gonna be earlier.
