Need some advice guys. I’m planning a trip from Louisiana to Denver in July to visit my son (2 days). I’d like to take him some vacuum sealed, frozen Crappie and trying to figure out the best way to keep it frozen. Right now planning on frozen gallon and half gallon jugs of water. Have any of you used dry ice? I’m open for suggestions.

We used dry ice to keep caribou frozen on the long trip home (Newfoundland) ,bought it by the number of hours home. if you have access to dry ice it will do the job ,might watch for freezer burn with direct contact to dry ice. When it melts there's no liquid to deal with . :twocents
Dry ice is what they use to pack seafood for those that buy it while on vacation and wish to take it home.

I'd go the dry ice route, as well. Medications are packaged with dry ice for long trip shipping, so I'd trust it for transporting fish. Just put a layer or two of cardboard between the dry ice and the packaged fish to avoid "contact burns" (as Micmac stated).

I believe I have seen a sign at Walmart as well.
I'd say grocery store, here locally Hy-Vee sells it.
Does the ice chest have to be vented?

We ship frozen/vacuum sealed salmon from Skwentna, Alaska to Shelby, NC (About 4700 miles and two days) in cardboard boxes with aluminum bubble wrap liners and no ice of any kind. Do it every year during the second or third week of August. Never had a problem with any of it. I don't know how cold it is in the cargo of a jet, though. Maybe below freezing all the way?
we shipped all of ours back in boxes no ice as well to Texas , never had an issue . also packed some in our luggage a few times and it worked good too .Quote:

No one is saying anything about the Yeti cooler that’s supposed to keep ice for extended periods. I travel ten to twelve hrs home from Kentucky Lake with my frozen fish in a cooler with a bag of ice covering them and they’re still frozen when I get home. Never thought about using dry ice. I guess half a day is a short trip.
