Got into the technical stuff and had to quit. That first stuff was good though! I started ultra lite in Germany in the service probably no other reason than it was different. Here in Oregon I've never caught many very big trout and it's a requirement here to fish for trout or be looked down on! But I really liked my UL by then and when I started crappie fishing a couple years ago the value of UL became obvious to me. I generally prefer baitcasting but try to cast a 1/64th oz jig on a bait casting outfit, just doesn't work. Here in Oregon also the biggest crappie I've ever seen was 13". Mostly so far where I fish were 8" fish. Really can't see using a crane to catch a small fish. The 10" and up fish I have caught were a lot of fun to catch, the 8" fish reminded my of my childhood and 3" bluegills! My favorite rod and reel for crappie is a very small UL Ocuma reel with 2# line on a 5' Ocuma rod with a slip bobber and 1/64 oz jig. My bobber's are about 1" cork balls. Tried to cast them with one of my lever winds, what a joke! Catching them with my UL is a hoot! I have three other small spinning rods also but think they are a step up from true UL. Still a lot of fun but just not as much as UL. Seems like so many years after I started fishing UL I have found the fish UL was meant for!
Ya know, getting old really sucks! I was thinking earlier today that this site didn't have anything about UL equipment in it. Gripped a bit and "G" sent me over here. Like a kid in a toy shop. Finally got down to here and what do I find? Post by me two days ago I completely forgot about! Ya getting old sucks!

My first UL was a 5’ browning Silaflex rod and a Diawa mini mite reel, gold in color. 1/32 jigs and whatever curl tails I could find did the trick, and that’s not to forget the Evans Shyster in-line spinner. The box could have fit in my pocket. Wore the gears out in the reel so bad that it would bind fighting a small fish. Showed it to Tim Stallings, TJ’s Dad that owned a local tackle shop and would clean and repair reels. He fooled with it a minute and handed it back to me and said “son, you’ve gotten all there is to get out of that one”. I left it with him for the parts. I’ve had one ever since and that was in the late 70’s. Truly an addiction but one I’m happy to talk about.
It was good to read of the history of my addiction, I’ve known for a long time that I wasn’t alone with it.
