Anyone having any success at night yet? I haven't been yet at night but my step son will be in town as of this weekend and he addicted to fishing. We usually head out to the lakes at night.
Last year went to Taylorsville a few times and caught a lot of fish. One thing I noticed there was once the minnows moved in we would catch some crappie. Later in the evening as the shad moved in, the crappie seemed to leave. Any suggestions?
Start white bass and catfishin'. You could try for Hybrids, but I've yet to EVER see a hybrid come out of T-Ville. :pQuote:

haven't tried the night bite yet myself. Gonna make one more daytime outing this weekend on Kentucky lake. Plan on tightlining early and then will experiment with trolling some crankbaits throughout the day.
Trolling cranks, and nightfishing are two things that I have little to no experience with at all. Guess you just gotta get out there and try and through trial and error hopefully figure something out.
I tried once last year at Barren River Lake....got pretty disgusted with it! Got to the lake after dark and couldn't find any store open to buy minnows. Poor planning on my part. It's hard to be confident and stay out there when your not exactly sure what your doing and not catching anything! Be nice to have someone knowledgable show you how.
I think my next game plan will be just to set up in an area where I know the crappie are near. I'm thinking over a deep creek channel. Throw out some lights and see what happens.
I'll post my results so maybe we can all learn what will work and what doesn't. Good fishing to everyone.
I personally have always set up over deep points with lanterns, but only because that is all I have. Haven't had the time or money to by the green lights yet. Like I said earlier, I usually catch fish for about two or three hours and then here come the shad. Once they come in, there goes the crappie. Hybrids are fun and I am sure I could catch some, but I want the fillets and I would rather eat driftwood then to eat a hybrid.
I'd have to agree with you on eating the hybrid, I'm not sure why the Crappie would move out with the arrival of the shad unless the hybrid follwoing the shad scare them off. Does moving to another deep point put you back on the Crappie? just curious, because Barren is the closest lake for me that I'll probably be nightfishing on and it's full of hybrid.

I am guessing if I moved it would have helped. Everytime I have had it happen, I had the young ones with me and just figured it was a sign to head home. Now that they are older, I will try to move a see if that helps. I agree, the hybrids are probably scaring off the crappie. About 15 years ago I got into the hybrids out there doing the same thing and caught fish on every drop of a minnow. They were all small but it was a blast. Haven't had that happen again.

this is so true. It's very frustrating to know you have the right tackle and don't know how to use it. I know this very well, but I'm not going to give up.
How big were those hybrid running? I'm gonna try trolling some crankbaits on Barren pretty soon. Probably will try on the channel across from the state ramp. Caught some good crappie in that area during the winter when the water was down.
i have been fishing green river at night caught over 100 friday and last friday night fishing around the marinas with green lights kept 27 one night and 37 the other night 11 - 12- 13 inch fish
Wow.... way to go. Are there any of those grren lights that don't cost a lot of money? I have seen some of them way up to $100 or so. I love to fish, but I am not spending $100 for a light. If there are in cheaper ones out there, are they any good?
yes you can get them at bass pro for 29 to 30 dollars get the 21 inch ones i use to of them
they are good lights low amp draw i catch fish all the time on them i tryed the white lights for years no luck it all changed when i went to green lights
I think you can even get an affordable green light at Wal-mart. I've got one of the bigger 4ft green lights, but unsure exactly how deep I need to set it. After this weekend, I'm going to become nocturnal.
bass pro has the green fishing lights on sale now 9in 11.88 21in 17.88 hard to beat that price I just ordered a couple extras

Hey guys, the hybrids are good to eat if you cut all of the red stripe out. I think some people call it a mud streak. Anyway, if you remove all of the red/brown meat from the fillet, they are "almost" as good as crappie and bluegil IMHO. Try it, I think you may change your mind.Quote:

jigboy the ones from bps has a15ft cord and we use blacklights and fluorecent line or the slip floats from bps shows up to with blacklights and don't draw as many bugs
i use to 21inc green lights one in front one in back and to black lights one in front one in back drop lights 6inchs under water i do not stay in one spot i move around very slow the bait fish will tag alone with the green lights set like this it will give plenty of light to see your poles the black light will show your lines in case a crappie goes side ways i fish taylorsville to its close for me have caught nise crappie there.
