Time to move on.

Had a good day bed picking shell cracker at Nickajack today. Had about 2 dozen decent sized fish and my biggest shell cracker of the year….a 12 inch brute. Sure was a ton of fun on the Abu Garcia Diplomat Extreme 6’ 2” UL Area Trout Rod using the 2.3# test ES2 ester line. The lure…….a Bison colored Trout Magnet on a Daiwa Gekkabijin 1.5 gram jig head #10 hook. Time to move on from Nickajack. The spawn is done there and during the daytime hours in the summer the bluegill bite is almost non existent. Of course I am sure the bite is good very early morning or very late evening but the drive is too far for me to get there early…could do the evening bite though. Checked out the tail race before heading home and it was void of fish. I hope it was just an off day below the dam as it has been a great spot for me in summer months with Spotted bass and crappie. Life is good!

One of those at twelve inches is definitely a brute! I’ve caught them at eleven and couldn’t do anything with them until they said so. A good day for you anyway and I hope you find your summer fish to keep you busy.

That is a big shell cracker

Great catch on the big Shellcracker, been years since I tangled with one that size. The heat is back in E TN, early morning and late evenings are a must now. Fish on, they still have to eat.

Must be a lot of fun fighting fish that size, sure you will be on fish elsewhere in no time.

Yes, great post and beautiful fish! I think you’re right on with early morning and evenings. For creek fishing up my way early morning is proving pretty good. Sowbug and Bison have been a good ticket for me - my best smallie of the season was a Bison TM in a seam between slower water and a riffle.

I am familiar with the area you are fishing. Thought about going today. I notice you fish way off the bank when you're "bed picking". I've never been able to catch open water fish but I may try again. Friends of mine fished around Shell Mound Sunday and caught over 150 but they use earthworms. i just like foolin them with artificials. Thanks for the posts!

That is a "Hawg Trough". Sold at lots of places online and in stores also. Mine is 10 year old and I obviously need a new one.
