This weekend
Ive had a couple of good trips this weekend. Fun and some color yesterday and a bunch of Crappie and a stud Gill today. The color I speak of was a spot of orange from the pec fins forward that was bright like a redbreast as I reeled him in but turned a deep rusty brown by the time I could take the pic. Never seen one do that before. Today’s fish just had a bigger body structure than yesterday’s and fought like a largemouth. I caught a limit of crappie today in about 2 hours but what sticks in my mind is the one Gill I caught. Hope y’all got out and put a smile on your face so I’m not the only one making folks wonder what I’ve been up to.

Those are some brutes. I have been trying for 3 weeks to get the boat in the water. Either rain or work has kept me out of the water

Man, a couple of very nice pans. Interesting on the color change. Never heard or saw that before. Sounds like a hybrid of some type?

That's a Coppernose Bluegill, which is not a hybrid. It's a Florida strain of Bluegill. We have them where I fish in Bama that weigh up to 3#.

That is a good looking Gill, and size wise a definite brute from public waters. You traded the Smallmouth in TN for the Coppernose in FL…..

Bob, that’s what I thought when I saw it on the end of the line but I’ve never seen a redbreast close to that size and his colors and dimensions are definitely CNBG. I’ve seen the orange I spoke of on other pans but never on one like this. Next time I see it I’ll try to get a pic of it before they come in the boat.
And Jack hit the nail on the head, the big one was truly a brute.

The copper nose had the orange spot ?

Man, this brings back memories. When I was stationed at Eglin AFB my friends and I fished all the little holes and ponds located all over the reservation. Caught many, many of those purple rascals. Not many other people would use the energy to get to these ponds. We had to walk in to all of them.

Those are two awesome gills there Skeet! And a limit of crappies to sweeten the deal too, but I'd be thinking of them gills myself.

Eagle, yes. An orange spot that was behind the Gill plates to the fin on very bottom maybe an inch or so long. In the pics it’s more of a brown but it was much brighter during the fight. Some other of the Gill varieties have the spot but it doesn’t change. Honest, I’m not going ‘round the bend.

Those are some nice gills for sure! Glad you got out and put a bend in the rod!

Beauties! No gills for me this weekend, just bass and crappie and an errant catfish.
