After blanking 2 Fridays in a role on jigs i broke down and bought some minnows, Had 12 blacks most were around 10" 11 males and 1 female. Eggs still had a ways to go, also had 3 large bluegill and 8 bass that went all the way to shy 5lb, (201/4") out of the same spot. Fish were 9 feet deep over 15 feet of water. Temps were 61 to 63 when I left, wind was so bad I had to tie up to trees to fish.
Thanks for the report, buddy. At least someone can catch Crappie out of Cedar Creek ... :biggrin ... I sure haven't the last several times I've tried. :banghead
I see they're a couple weeks behind schedule, just like the Green River Lake fish.
Congrats on finding the fish. Cedar creek has not been very productive for me but I do not fish it often. I agree with CP that the crappie seem to be a little behind schedule this year.
I did pretty good about the third week of April and they were right up on the bank and the water was 63-64 degrees. Its colder now than it was then. I would catch 15 6 inch fish to each biggun but I got some gooduns. Its a frustrating place to fish no doubt worse when its windy.

I know Blacknose Crappie are in Cedar Creek, because I've caught them ... and I'm almost sure there's some White Crappie in there, too, as I've caught one that looked more like a White Crappie than a Black Crappie. (all of which happened many years ago, and none were keeper size)
So my question is : have any of ya'll that fish Cedar Creek caught an obvious White Crappie ?? And have any of ya'll caught any Blacknose ??
I’ve fished cedar creek several times big bluegills but never found big crappie. Guess I need to put out some brush

Just blacks for me and I have fished it since they put the water in. Its not uncommon someone catches a odd fish in there. I saw a fella one night at the dock with a nice hybrid bass and I have seen some dandy smallmouth caught and released.Quote:

Same for me I have fished Herrington off and on for almost 50 years and have yet to catch a smallmouth. I also heard it had rockfish at one time but I've yet to see one. I did hear the Hybrids have come back pretty good. I'm going on a guide trip on the 24th for hybrids at Herrington. I cant believe I'm hiring a guide for a lake I have fished all my life but he seems to be dialed in to consistent catches so he has figured out something I couldn't and from what he charges I just about cant fill my boat and truck up with gas. As far a Cedar goes I'm going to say that within the next month or 2 you will have a hard time finding water on it for the grass it is already getting bad. My plan is to spend most of this late spring and summer fishing Cumberland at night for crappie.Quote:

I've not fished Cedar at night with lights and I probably never will after the last time I was there at night. I was testing out my Livescope and could barely see the Garmin screen for all the "bugs" attracted to it. The closer I got to any stand of trees or the bank, the worse they got. And the sad thing about it was ... I scoped 7 or more stands of trees in the dam ramp area, and there wasn't a single fish on any of them. :Doh: After that fiasco I've all but given up on fishing Cedar Creek.
Yes use green lights and lanterns at both. I've done pretty good at Cumberland at times even got into some walleye actually thinking about going this Sat night but I've never started this early. I will do a trip or 2 at night at Cedar every year. You need to take about 5000 minnows because you will catch 4000 3-4 inch crappie a night lol . I usually manage a few and since it is a mile from my house its something to do but If I want to put fish in the freezer I feel like my best chance is at Cumberland. I have never tried the night bite at Green I probably should.Quote:

Yeah, wouldn't surprise me about those weights in Crappie. I saw a pic of a HUGE Redear that was caught by the guy that used to own the little store at the ramp by the dam. I can't remember the exact weight, but it was several pounds. Biggest Redear I've caught from there was maybe 8-9", and I've caught several of that size from there ... but that was back in the early years of the lake, and when I was boatless and a bank angler.Quote:

We had a good time Sat night. Took my BIL, his friend and my wife. We caught about 15 good crappie one about 2 pounds and 100+ too small. Tried out a 12 dollar amazon led light that lit up the boat well.

Deadaim looks like a fun night for sure. How many lights do you guys put out and how deep do you put the lights. Going to order myself a light or lights. Thanks
I had out three green lights about a foot deep. We were in about 50 feet of water fishing about 12 feet deep. We had one white led in the boat to see the poles . It seems like they bit better when I dimmed the lights down some. I usually turn them up full blast and then turn them down on a dimmer after I get the bait up. I use the 2 foot Hydroglow green lights and a LED in the boat up on a pole about 12 feet high to keep the bugs off.
DA ... were you tied off to a tree, or drifting around ?? Also, did you turn off your electronics to keep the bug swarms away, or did the light up high keep them "occupied" ??
We anchored pretty close to the old 150 bridge and then moved in the cove buy the dam about 12 and tied off to a tree in 60 feet of water. Any bugs did seem to key onto the light up high and it helped although they didn't seem as bad as years past. I always turn off my electronics when I park to fish to minimize draining the battery and the pinging. Think I'm going to Cumberland this Sat night to see how its going.Quote:
