Fishing rod and reel suggestions

So I've been using a pretty random bass rod and reel I picked up at Walmart about 5 years ago, and, while I've caught fish on it, I've struggled to cast out smaller lures. Does anybody have suggestions for a rod and reel combo? I mainly fish for bluegill, but I'm planning to start fishing for crappie and trout. I'd like to be able to cast small jigs (trout magnet size), as well as larger jigs and spinners for trout.

I'd like to keep the price for both under $120 or so.

BnM TCB (Trout Crappie Bluegill) rod. It’s originally the Leland Trout Magnet Slab Slayer rod. Great rod and can cast those lures perfectly.

Thanks! I'll check it out. I see that they sell a combo with a reel as well, do you have any experience with that reel, if so, do you recommend I purchase a different reel, or just order the combo?

It would work but I would probably get a better smoother one. Looked and seems combo is cheaper than rod almost....lol. Do a search here on cdc. There is a lot of information on this rod and the slab slayer. It’s highly recommended.

I don’t know anything about the reel but you will probably have to get the combo as I don’t know of anyone who has just the rod in stock. I did a review on the rod on my YouTube channel and I gave away I think 3 of them. For the price I don’t think you can beat the rod. The rod weighs 2.4 ounces...very sensitive. I landed a lot of 10-15 pound Buffalo when testing that rod. The rod has a high graphite content and I don’t recommend flipping fish into the boat with it.

I'm a bank fisher, so often time I just flip the fish onto the bank. Would I need to get a net, or just support the fish?

Ok thanks! I don't want to sacrifice convenience, but I could easily just reach down, so that's not a big deal. Looks like I'll buy the combo and upgrade the reel later, if I need to. Thanks for the advice. I'll watch your review tomorrow before I order it, but from what I've read so far, it looks good.

The TCB for is one sweet rod for crappie and bluegill.

+1 on the above. It is a very nice rod for the money and gives you a real good U/L experience.

just be really careful when you lip them pickerel ......:Rofl
if i were you and targeting mostly sunfish , i would likely have several inexpensive rods for different modes .
Shakespeare carries a huge number of different combos that are inexpensive and work real well .
if ya break one who cares ,no big deal :highfive

I live relatively close to the NYC water reservoirs, which have trout and crappie, so I'm probably going to fish there as well. One of the main reasons I've been targeting sunfish is that most places have ok fishing from the bank, without having to cast super far.

for the price of one of the combos mentioned you could carry 3 different Shakespeare versions and have about every bank scenario covered
of course to each his own .but there aint nothing worse than to get somewhere and have ONLY one rod with you that dont fit the program :highfive

I'll look into that, but I think that I'd rather just have 1 rod that works in most scenarios, than have to carry 3 rods when walking along the bank.

The TCB would make a great bank rod. I only bought the rod & put a pflueger on it. Careful not to snake that rod on a tree branch. It is an UL. If you can get away with it spool it with 4# test

The TCB will be fine. I bank fish a lot and much prefer one rod and a pocketful of baits.

I'm probably going to use 6#, at least for now, as there are some plants and stuff I snag quite often, and that's what I have on hand. I'll upgrade it if needed, though.n

If you like spin cast reels
I recommend the Daiwa Gold cast
I’ve had one for about 5 years.
Fool proof, tough, Caught lots of fish, gills , bass , crappie, catfish.
Then find a rod you like . I use a 5ft ugly stick with this ^ reel

I own ten rods made by B&M from 4-1/2 feet to 16 ft. I'll own a sharpshooter as soon as they catch their inventory back up. I gotta good feeling that they make pretty good reels as well.
